Thanks for the offer Penman, but I just got six bags from Ray - so I think that will be enough.

Am I correct in saying that southdown has gone out of business and the same playsand they sold now has the oldscastle label on it? Also it says on thr label that it is not safe for use in fish tanks. Is this the same stuff I want to pick some up for my 75 gallon but want to make sure its the same thanks, TJ

Be very careful if you call a HD before you go. The computers of 3 local stores all showed 35, 68, and 206 bags at stores that were actually out of stock. Have them physically check before you run around. We finally found some near Portsmouth.

I screened my SD though a fine metal sieve and found organics like leaf bits and dark (I hesitate to say it(although this sand must come in contact with hydraulic equipment which always leak fluid)) oily clumps, I used the remaining in the tank with no ill effects so far (few weeks).

I wouldn't just dump it in the tank, thats just my opinion tho ;).

Also southdown/ old castle have an agreement with CarribSea to lable their bags as not for aquarium use (older RC thread talks of this and how it comes from the same supplier), CarribSea would also screen it for size. (crushed coral, fine sand etc... and wash it, i would assume)

The price is right and most have no trouble, just screen it first (easy for me to say I only have a 20 long :D ), if you have time!

Who is Ray and does he have any more bags?
My local HD only had Play Sand.

Londonderry had about 30 bags on Sunday. They are pretty close to you. Exit 4 off of 95

Thanks Ray for the offer. I guess I noticed this post to late. Thanks for hauling the bags of sand to the meeting. It really helped me out!

Oldcastle seems to be the label that the same company uses for Walmart and a few other locations. As far as I know, Home Depot is still carrying Southdown.
Both bags will say not for aquarium use. That's to avoid competition with their other bagged aragonite sand that's sold in pet stores (at a much higher price).

I bought the last bag at the Merrimack HD this morning. I spoke with the Manager who said he would order another two pallets but it would be a few weeks before they arrived.

Oldcastle is the only label that I can find at any area Home Depot. I'm still told that it is the same as southdown and yardright. I have pick up 4 bags this past weekend.
