SOLD

Free mantis shrimp if anyone wants him. I got it with some live rock from the gulf. He's about two inches long, dark back, very neet coloring on the front kind of a metalic green blue with orange feeler thingies.

I don't know if anyone keeps them around here, but it seems like it's worth a try before I squish him.

Why are mantis shrimp bad?

They have been known to kill & eat snails, hermit crabs, and fish. Mean little predators, they are. Very cool looking, but not a welcome resident when they kill expensive fish.

As I understand it they are prediters and can get pretty big and eat fish. They have a super fast strike and can really hurt your hand when they get bigger. Some people keep them in their own little tanks and feed them shrimp and silversides. They are pretty neet to watch.

Nice, sounds like I need to get some of them for my sick tank...
They can take care of anything that is sick for me.

Do you know if he is a spearer or a crusher Mantis? I'm going to be setting up a nano at my new job soon. If he is a spearer I'll take him.

How do you tell the difference?

If you look at the claws.... If he is a spearer he will have a claw that has a sharper point to it. there won't be as much difference between the two claws. The crusher claw would be larger and much more muscular..Similar to a lobsters crusher claw. As I understand it. i haven't seen one in person so I'm going off second hand info.

Cindy,

If you come down to the norhth shore I will give you a frag for it. I just don't have the time to shoot up to Windham but I have a Q tank that I might want to keep him in.

Email me if you are interested

Gosh, I was afraid that I would be laughed at for offering a mantis shrimp. Anyone want some aiptasia?

dad300:
I would say that he doesn't have a big claw. He keeps his little front feet folded in like a praying mantis. They are a really nice metalic green. The eyes are really cool too. They look like no other eyes I've ever seen. I wish I could get a good pic of him. If you want him you can have him. I'll try not to starve him to death in the meantime.

Cindy,
I'm going to have to pass. The tank that i was going to use has a crack in it that I was unaware of. Sorry! Hopefully someone else wants him. He sounds beautiful. I also understand they make really good shrimp cocktail too!
