GROUP BUY, how about a SALT BUY, I can always use MORE.
GOOD LUCK GOOD REEFIN :p
Good idea, but keep in mind that in February a lot of us took advantage of a Petsmart glitch that essentially gave free shipping. So there's a lot of salt warehoused around here.

I agree - I could use a Salt group buy. I did not get in on the Petsmart buy because of the trouble some of you had with credit cards. It didn't seem worth the risk. I just paid a fortune for a bucket . . .

I do not think nearly enough people got in on the salt glich for PetSmart. They quickly fixed their problem, either way. There are always hoards of reefers in the market for a good deal whether they need it or not. If someone can facilitate a group buy for buckets of Instant Ocean, I am sure we can get a bunch of people to buy some at the next meeting.
I would be good for two buckets.
So will any local places chime in and see if we can get a deal going?

I would love to know the laymans version of what the article is about.
All I can say really is that the important part of this article to non-chemists in my opinion is the series of graphs showing the concentrations of the various parameters. There are three things about this article that bother me though. First is that it was done based on single containers of each mix. Statistically, not a great way to ensure that the data is representative of each company's mix. Second is that it was done in 1999 and chances are the manufacturers have changed their mixes since then.
And third is that the people who conducted the method didnt mix their water the way most aquarists do. Their article says that since NSW is 35 parts per thousand salt they mixed 35 grams of salt with 1 liter of water and analyzed those samples. IMO it would have made more sense to use whatever quantity of salt mix was required to get to 35ppt and analyze that sample.
They say they adjusted their data to 35 ppt but that doesnt seem to be reflected in the tables either that or they could have done a better job showing the adjustments that were made.
To me the study proves nothing. What it generally tells me is that all the salt mixes are similar based on one bucket of each bought from one store back in 1999.
Does this make me cynical :)

i requested quotes from our LFS and online vendors. online was less $$ but with shipping added in, put us over the LFS quotes.
all three LFS that responded we fairly close in price but,
Aquaddicts came in at the lowest price of 40.00 per bucket for the 200g. thier regular price is 55.00.
due to the weight (~50 lbs), pickup will need to be at their store

Hey Everyone!
I just talked to Mike, he placed an order for 30 buckets of salt that will be here tomorrow. So far I count 26 buckets that are accounted for, up to and including Paula, so there are 4 more buckets left in this order that can be sold. Just wanted to give people a heads up before 10 more buckets were wanted and AA could only fulfill 4 of them. If there is still a large interest (25-30 more buckets) Mike can try to work something out for next week and hopefully get the same price as this week. If people have any questions you can PM either Mike (Aqua Addict) or I.
:)

As you all know I have 30 coming tomorrow. I will take orders for more and they will be here next Thursday. The cut off for ordering salt is Sunday at Midnight. So the first 30 can pick up Tomorrow, and all after that can get them next Thursday.
Thanks,

tmorsey confirming 1 bucket - is one of the 30 buckets you ordered targeted for me? I was on your most recent list posted yesterday.
Does Mike at AA have the list of names and bucket counts? I don't want to drive all the way up and find nothing there for me - like the scarlet crab group buy a couple of months ago.

Just for further clarification, the numbers that I calculated were based on the people who had confirmed after Scott's last post (post #40).
tmorsey you are all set with a bucket, you are on the list.
Cindy, there were 28 buckets spoken for when you posted, you can pick up 2 this week if you want, or just wait till the next order, just let me know so I can put you on this weeks list or next weeks.
Mike said that as long as he can pull 15-20 buckets together for next week he'll be able to sell them for the same price (which shouldn't be a problem), so keep the orders coming, I'm going to be starting a list for next weeks orders. Here is a list of people who are confirmed for the salt buy this week:

rockybottom,
I apologize for any confusion that happened with the list. When Scott put the list together he said that we needed a final count the 12th at noon because that was when we needed to order the salt by for delivery on Thursday, so unfortunately the people who didn't reply by noon (or shortly thereafter) were not included in that weeks group buy. We knew that everything moved very fast which was why we tried to accommodate with a group buy for the following week with the same deal. We didn't want to place an order based on the people who wanted the salt before the details were finalized because we didn't want to get stuck with a bunch of buckets at the store that people couldn't or didn't want to pick up. Sorry again for the confusion...

Hey Everyone... As far as the Group buy goes there are several people that have not picked up their salt. They (and you know who you are) have until the end of the day Sunday (unless you make arrangements with me) to get your salt from the Group Buy. Then the salt goes back to its original price. I can't sit on the stuff so starting Tuesday of next week it will be back to $55.
Thanks to those who have picked up their salt,
Mike
