I think you have some talent. Time to invest in a better camera, then your skills will really show!

Chris-
I went to a photo school for several years and have been through many critiques. Im sure gumhead may jump in to. Here is my critique.

The best 2 shots are the ones of the pink flowers and the blue flowers.

Now the critique part:
1) Work on NOT centering your subject.
2) Work on getting something interesting and visually stimulating in the background. especially when photographing nature you need to have the background look natural. A moth on a pc of paper or a desk or screen offers nothing unless you are shooting for a science text book. the catipiller gets a little better since it is at least on wood, but its freshly sawed wood, again not natural.
3) work on controlling your depth of field so the subject is in focus but distractions in the background are not. The pink flowers work well cause they are relatively sharp ( abit too soft) yet the softer ones around them are out of focus creating a pleasing background that is both natural and interesting. Compare that with the yellow or purple flower where the entire plant is in focus (way too centeted) but the leaves are not really interesting to look at all sharp and would look better soft. I think the Blue flower shot does this well but I would like to see the flower more to one side and less in the center. I would say that is the 2nd best shot you have-maybe the best.
4) the quarter? Im guessing that was some sort of test for your camera?

Looks good!

Nice. Good composition of the frame (using the diagonal like that and having it weighted to the right). Is that another slug in the background? At first that bothered me a bit but now I kind of like it, makes me feel like there is an entire herd of them.. I wish that 1 pc of grass wasnt there but other then that, very nice..

That picture hit me the same way as stang8's and before I read his reply. Nice picture, but would be better without the grass and background slug. A few minutes with Photoshop could fix that.

Jim

Chris,

Hope you don't mind I wanted to see what it looked like without the background slug and grass.
