Ok here's another photo thread, we really need a photo forum to separate all the photo threads

Ok so lets see them fishin pictures!
I mostly bass fish from the shore and my boat. Here's a little guy I caught yesterday at an undisclosed location. It was a nice fat female weighing in at 6 pounds! (well 5.9 lbs on my digital scale)...

Doooooh! That MIGHT not be a keeper, but close. 25, 26 incher...those lil' ones are the sweetest!

I caught a BUNCH of those schoolies in Falmouth last week. I was using a 5 1/2 foot rod with ultralight reel and 6 lb test line. Now THAT is fun. Every striper felt like a Mako on that rod.

JustDavidP

Sunfish. I've seen plenty of those fins in Nantucket Sound. They cruise the Muskeget Channel all the time. I'll never forget my first sighting. I swore it was a "man eater". ;)

Scuba_Dave

Yes, Gilbert is actually 7' 6" tall. so the fish just looks small....

You guys are good. I though you would be guessing a shark like I thought it was. How about the other picture?

One more for you to guess. This one was caught in the Florida Keys as a hint.

Brian
07-13-2004, 09:40 AM
Second pic looks like what you see wehn the stripers are finning. The Keys one is some sort of cowfish maybe?

JustDavidP
07-13-2004, 09:48 AM
The second shot (under the sunfish) could be bonefish tailing??

The last shot is of a yellow spotted cowfish?

NateHanson
07-13-2004, 10:48 AM
Here's the great white's toothless cousin a couple weekends ago on the northwest corner of Stellwagen bank. This basking shark was about 25 feet. (the head and tail are both outside the frame of the shot). Frankly I think I'd be more afraid of a sunfish than these teddy bears.

A bit further south on the Bank we came across either a small fin whale or a large minke, around 40 feet, which played around within 50 feet of our boat for about 5 minutes.

NateHanson
07-13-2004, 11:02 AM
Uh oh, Gilbert, is that fish 27 inches?!?

If the DVD cases on top of Gilberts TV are 7 1/2 inches tall, like mine, then his tender little friend is just over 28 inches. There go the Striper Police!

Nate

Yeah... I guess I have to admit that he's mine ;) Both pictures are of my oldest boy. My lil' one isn't really into the fishing thing yet. He can't sit still long enough.

Gumhead... I love that shot too. I have a picture of that image spliced into a picture of my first fish (1969) at home. That darned fish could have been a shark or the lil white sucker that it was...but it was HUGE to him.

Gumhead and all,
I've been out of fresh water for a while. I always liked my spinners for catching just about anything and large surface plugs for catching the big bass. Any tips we can though out here for someone who needs to restock his freshwater tackle box? I'd like to hear thoughts on must have equipment from line to lures.

thanks guys, the striper was barely legal, I can't wait to catch one this year.
I live 5 min from Castle Island, anyone is welcomed to come fishing this weekend
(off the shore,I don't have a boat) The deal is, if you or I catch one, I will cook the fish tacos and we all enjoy. Send me a PM if anyone wants to swing by & go fishing.

JustDavidP
07-16-2004, 02:46 PM
Groove... get some Sara Spooks, or Heddon's Torpedo's for topwater. 1/4 ounce jigs (red and blues) for bottom. The crayfish are molting and the bass are hammering jigs right now. Other than that, most of the "classics" are getting some attention. Many fishermen are using the same baits/lures and the fish pick up on that. I've been using the old lures (red devils, jitterbugs, etc.) and have been hammering them.

He He He... The calm before the storm.

We caught a dozen large fluke, two bluefish, and a handfull of bass on Saturday. They were deep, on Middlegrounds (45' hole) and hitting jigs (given to me from Capt. Tansey...thanks Jim!) tipped with fluke skins.

http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b4d637b3127cceb43b3d836cd80000003510

Shane's first was 2 inches too small, but he gut hooked it and it bled pretty so I kept it.

http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b4d637b3127cceb43b3d9cedf70000001510

I didn't measure mine, but it passed my hash mark on my fishing rod and it was a keeper none the less.

Grilled bass, fried fluke, and stuffed quahogs for dinner last night!

Jim,

I've got the GPS coords if you are interested. Nice lil' hole off of Middlegrounds closest to the chops. It's a 5 minute run from the Childs.

Most of the bass are down. The water is REAL warm and the blues are on the top of the column. Every bass I pulled had a gut full of squid and green crabs. Yet another indicator of fish sitting on bottom.

We even hit bass and blues on the "will ketchum" fluke rigs we were using. One cow took both fluke teasers with squid from one rig.

Thanks again for the jigs brother!

Dude....you weren't alone. The rip tides have all the fish a lil' spooked. I spent 4 hours on the water on Saturday and had one black sea bass to show for it. Not a striper to be found. The fluke were a little flukey too. Some folks caught blues on top in the rips, but that's about it.

I was using 8 oz of weight and STILL couldn't keep the baits at the bottom. That current was downright ornery!

I did pretty well with the stripers last weekend up on the New Hampshire coast in Rye. Biggest was 27" but alot of fun on light spin tackle and the flyrod nonetheless.

Also on a recent trip offshore for tuna, no fish but lots of other life like this (too) friendly young seal and a pod of white sided dolphins or porpoises (sp?). Made the trip interesting.

Some good saltwater fishing should be starting now as the water cools down and the Stripers and Bluefish start their migration.

JMAC, where offshore were you fishing for tuna ?

I was out with a friend a couple of weeks ago. We hooked up and landed an
80lb Bluefin out on Stellwagen. We covered a lot of area, went all the way down
to Cape Cod Bay from Beverly and then back up to the NW corner of Stellwagen
when the fish hit a chunk below the boat.

I've got some pics, but they need to be resized.

Karl and I tried there last weekend. We got skunked - not a bite.
Guy across the street was using night crawlers and pulled in a couple of nice bass. Spinner baits just weren't working.
Karl was thinking of taking some of the weeds we caught to a Boston Aquarium Society meeting for sale. ;) Might recoup the cost of the lures we lost. :(

Mike, my cousin keeps his boat on the Merrimack river in Newburyport. We ran out straight from the river mouth offshore. He mostly fishes the area from Cape Ann to Halfway Hump and beyond to Jefferies ledge for tuna. Yes, tuna fishing does consist alot of running around and looks like you put in your miles! lol. 80 lbs. is a nice sized fish, congrats. Glad you were able to avoid the dogfish to use chunkbait.

Nate, we saw a large pod of dolphins that day. Maybe 50 or so.

I fished Vinyard Sound this weekend. The water temps are outrageous with near bottom temperatures in the high 60's and low 70's. I caught just two small fluke. I'm sure that the higher temps are a result of the storms and the annual shift of the Gulf Stream. I caught two juvenile Jack Crevalle's and a yellow puffer fish with black stripes (4 inches). The tropicals are up and in New England. Probably a GREAT opportunity for dives to see some of the "visitors".
