Dumb Question

What is the purpose of hosting images on a web site? I see many people do it, so it must have advantages, I just don't know.

I host my own images so I don't have to worry about file size limitations primarily. Also I like to keep them all in one spot.

yep I agree, I do the same. I have my own website that I keep all my pictures on. I have 100's of pics there and if I want to post a picture that is Huge I can without question.

If I understand correctly you can post any file size, without regard to the site limits? How about file format like PSD, RAW, or GIF?

Well you can not post psd ot Raw files because browsers do not know how to render them. Raw can only be used by raw converters, some raw programs, and Photoshop cs. PSD can only be used with adobe image products (I think). But you can at least host them if you want, you just can't do anything with them...
