I got them at a petco(portsmouth)...... Don't hit me. a beautiful tank of captive bred true percs. whole tank was going gangbusters and eating. I was very impressed with them this time.

There is a side story to why I went in there... I won't bother to explain but a local pet store really ticked me off.

The difference is the black lines around the white stripes. At least as I understand it. I did a double check on them when I got home in RC.
the following link has pictures of the different clowns. follow down and look at the difference.

I'm not sure, but as I understand it both can have the dark lines, but the true percs often have more black. The only way to tell the difference is the skin around the eyes. If it's orange then true perc. if it is brown or black then false. I would say these really look like False clowns to me. Post the pic to the clown forum, they'll tell you.

i'm pretty sure it is an ocellaris. both can have black lines around the white stripes. i think the only way you can tell is from counting the spines on its dorsal fin. but just from looking at a lot of clowns, i think they are ocellaris. but you might want to check RC too.

Well I have a post on the clownfish forum on RC and they think they are ocellaris as well. I also have a vote for one of each. they talk about the eye ring so I'm looking at the fish under actinic and I can't tell.. I'm going to look again tomorrow but... they are eating, playing and showing signs of dominance and submission. I cannot complain.

I personally think the O clowns are usually prettier as they get older. If they are from the same "batch" is there a concern about inbreeding? Wondering about mine.

FWIW every Petco i have seen lists their clowns as "Percula Clowns". They also list the sceintific name of these clowns in small print as Amphiprion Ocellaris.

Regardless of what they are, they are very nice looking :).

yeah. it doesn't really matter as long as you like them. i was just suggesting it because it is nice to know exactly what you have.

Peter,
I agree. It's always nice to know what you have. I appreciate the questions you asked because its allowed me to learn a little more about my fish. Can't have enough knowledge.

They are definitely ocellaris.. petco does not sell tank raised true percs (nobody does really, the tank raised true percs available from the hatcheries are very poor in color).
