are these black snails? they may be the brackish snails that you see on the web now and then. they are picked up in the marshes. if so they are not the same as those we see in most LFS's, they live but not very long in a salt water tank.

I'm interested too. There are however over 100 types of Nassarius. Most are suitable for reef environments (common is Nassarius Vibex) but the Obselutus (sp??) that are found on the east (and maybe west coasts) are cold water animals and are not really suitable for our tanks... and commonly sold on ebay.

We may want to reconcider this. I found this on wetwebmedia.com it seems that these are cold water snails http://www.wetwebmedia.com/snailselfaqs.htm
I think you can get these on Long Island

Cold Water Snails -
<Good morning, JasonC here...>
Rob Toonen was in town (Mich - MASM) and mentioned how surprised he was at all of the temperate water species he saw at his stop in Penn. Mostly snails. I too have see a lot of non tropical animals including Astrea snails (not so steeply sloped shells, brownish/ orange, and usually big - he thought they were from northern west coast), dark colored Nassarius snails (N. Ilyanassa obsoleta?), Moon snails, Catalina Gobies, etc. The articles on dyed corals have been great and I was wondering if you planned (or had) a similar article about temp. water species that are being sold? <As far as I recall, these variances are noted in/among the articles where they occur - snails, sharks, gobies, etc.> I noticed that Drs F & S warns people about the Moon snails they sell, but that is rare (p.s. they haven't bought you guys yet - have they??? ;-). Many people buy stuff like this and it ends up being one more nail in the coffin for their eventual exit from the hobby because they think its a problem with their ability to provide proper care, when in fact they just never had a chance in our 79 + - deg temps. VERY, VERY short sighted on the LFS and E-stores part. <Need to speak up at the stores where you spot such organisms.> WI am thinking about a couple of purchases and was wondering if you had any experiences with the following: I have noticed a "olive" snail (from FL) for sale at a LFS. I have attached a photo. They tend to stay under the sand. Do you have any experience with these? <Not directly.> Gulfview also sells them. I have also seen a snail called a Common Marginellas offered by Florida pets (see photo). Do you have any experience with these? <No.> I am also starting to see references to a "right handed" HC out of FL (Not in Mich yet, but Florida pets carries this, plus a few other e-stores). Any experience with it? <Have seen but not kept.> As far as the N. Ilyanassa obsoleta is concerned, I have noticed a number of people on e-bay selling them and I contacted some of the buyers and they are all very happy with them, some have had them for a year or so and one guy said they were breeding in his tank. The various people selling are from the Carolinas. It would seem that this is a bit too far north for a true tropical species. Have you had any experience with this snail? <No.>
And a different question - some web sites have the ability to get you right to the subject of your search. With your search engine, you get to the page but have to then read thru many questions to get to the one referenced in your search which sometimes turns out to have only mentioned your subject in passing. Am I doing something wrong? <No, this is the limit of the free service provided by Google.>
Thank you for your time,
Tim
<Cheers, J -- >

Why don't a few people ask their LFS if they want to put together pricing on a group buy for cleanup critters.

Here is an ebay item for "50 REEF SAFE LIVE SNAILS NASSARIUS OBSOLETA"
Starting bid $5, ($10 shipping)

Anyone had good/bad experience with buying corals on ebay?

xray-reefer
10-11-2004, 08:47 AM
I have never ordered anything live on E-bay, and with so many proven retailers/e-tailers, I doubt I ever will. Is this group buy happening? If so, I am down for 1 - 2 dozen, depending on price.

Ray
10-11-2004, 09:57 AM
No it is not due to them being cold water snails, same ones on ebay

Can we all get together and get a bunch from skiptons or one of the other sponsors? Can someone who knows B inquire about this? It obviously won't be a steal, but they will be true nassarius. I could use some more ceriths too.

NateHanson
10-11-2004, 10:41 AM
Turbos and crabs too please. I'd definitely prefer LFS, so we know what we're getting.

I will check with B at Skiptons some time this week to see what he can do for us. If anyone else wants to check elsewhere, feel free. Skiptons is around the corner from my office, and I am lazy.
