Can't seem to find locally and everybody seems to use it so why don't we do group buy on pickling lime or similar to what Greg ordered (don't remember the name..) in the past? Would some one like to arrange it? What do you guys think?
Thanks

I'd go in on it. I only have one jar left and I can't find it this year.

Well, I don't need any at the moment, but if someone wants to get some jars, here's a good site:
http://store.yahoo.com/mrswages/mrswagpiclim.html
It's $1.85 for a 16 oz jar, and shipping for five jars is $5.00. (I didn't price shipping for other size orders.)
Unless you are a chemist, I would recommend this over the calcium oxide that seems to have been purchased occasionally in the past.
Good luck!

Can the pickling lime be used in place of Kent's Kalk? Do you need to use anything in addition to the pickling lime, or is it a one-step process like the kalk?
Thanks,
Daire

It is same as Kalk but a lot cheaper...

Great! I would be happy to organize a buy if there are enough people who want to go in on it. I would be willing to buy it and bring to the next meeting. Let me know who's interested.

That's a great price on the Mrs. Wages. I would definitely prefer Wages over getting CaOH in bulk from an industrial source. The Pickling lime is food grade so you can be more confident of what's (not) in it.
Maybe we can get it directly from the source.

Nate - I was definitely thinking of ordering it from Mrs. Wages. If we order enough, maybe we could even get a bulk discount. But we need more people to join in...

I'd like to get some of this too, but isn't it cheap enough to just go pick up a freakin' walmart?
If anyone decides to go this route in the near future, lemme know :)

I think people are having trouble finding it Ryan. It's a seasonal thing, and the season is over.
And, not that it's a huge deal, but that link someone posted above is a couple bucks cheaper than when I've gotten it locally.

Balls pickling lime @ wallmart $1.79 a jar.
Just got 4 jars. There must me 15-20 jars left.

The website linked above will cost (including shipping)
$2.20 each for 20
$2.06 for 40
$2.01 for 60
I didn't look into any quantity discount, just plugged in numbers to find out if shipping went down with #.

How big is a Jar Daire? I've never bought this stuff, but I have a need for Lime water for Xenia control, and general tank dosing too :)
At a few dollars a jar, I'd probably buy several, but I just want to get a feel for how much I'm getting
<eyes lifetime supply of magnesium, realizes perhaps its a little bit too much...>

According to the above website, the jars are 16 oz for $1.85. I don't know how long this will last - it depends on how much you are dosing. But I'm going to get a bunch of jars for myself.

Ryan, the cans are the size of a coffe can (not the jumbo coffee cans, the regular kind). On my 30 I've used one can in about 6 months for top-off.

Stang,
You're right. Only problem I saw with the VHL (Vertical Hydrated Lime) Calcium Hydroxide (the stuff that -won't- blow up your kalk reactor armando...) is that it only comes in 50 or 1500 lb bags. That is a lot of lime.
I picked up 5 jars of Mrs. Pickle's Lime juice for 10 bucks, plus 5 shipping.
NateHanson
11-10-2004, 07:01 PM
You're not a team player Ryan. We needed your 5 pounds towards that 50 pound bag. And besides, what if one of your fish is Jewish? Huh? Did you think of that?? I didn't think so. Why can't you ever think about the Kosher fish?!?
;)
stang8s
11-10-2004, 07:16 PM
If you fish dont use kosher lime they will not be kosher when you go to eat them.
NateHanson
11-10-2004, 07:19 PM
I guess any of the fish that eat mysis aren't keeping kosher anyways, so maybe it's a safe bet if all your critters are eating mysis. Of course, who knows about the corals?
stang8s
11-10-2004, 07:24 PM
hmmm good point nate. Which makes me wonder if eating corals is kosher? I dont think they addressed that one when they made the rules.. Which makes me wonder yet further, if anyone actually eats corals and if they have any/much nutritional value if you could stomach them!

Sorry to be let down Nate :) I'm dreaming up my kalk/ro delivery system through my attic. Unfortunately I think it would be hard to get the water to go -up- from my RO/DI plumbed into my sink. If I hand carry up 50 gallons or so, and mix up the kalk, and let drip for a month, it'll be pretty nasty :) Auto topoff, no pump!
NateHanson
11-10-2004, 09:24 PM
I don't think you'll have a problem with your RO going up through the attic if it comes back down. Once the hose is full there is no head pressure on the RO system, if the outlet is at the same height as the unit. Besides that, mine delivers water to my kitchen sink and sump from the basement (about 8 feet vertical). No issues.

Why don't you hook up that ViaAqua 8000? :D The collection cup lid would hit the ceiling!
By the way, my tank is now all stocked, and the skimmer is pulling some nice green stuff.
Ok, I'd better say something to make this post relevant to Shoeib's thread . . . umm, we planted pickling cukes this year, but only got one beautiful cuke before the stem got some sort of rot. :( Next year I hope to make a big bucket of pickles (with Mrs. Wages of course ;))

Daire, not to nitpick (I know organizing a group buy involves a lot of trouble and I totally respect that), but how did you get to those totals for each person? If I'm reading it correctly, you're introducing some kind of quantity discount for people who got more jars, is that correct? I would think the order total (including shipping) would be divided equally among everyone, according to the number of jars they got... otherwise people who get a small number of jars don't really get much benefit from doing the group buy.
I thought I should add that I'm aware that the differences in this instance are just small change, but still wanted to bring it up...
Nuno

11-18-2004, 05:49 PM
No, I didn't intentionally give any quantity discounts. I simply took the number of jars ordered x 1.85 then I add $1.40 to each (this was the $8.50 shipping cost divided by the total people who have confirmed orders which was 6). Even if you only ordered 1 jar you are saving on the group buy because it would cost you $4 shipping on 1 jar. But I never claimed to be a finance person - so I'll recalculate it the way you suggested:
33 jars @ 1.85 = 61.05 + 8.50 = 69.55/33 ~ 2.10 per jar so....
dad300 - 2, $4.20 (I actually forgot dad300 on the original list, but I included him in my jar count - that could be why it looked so off!)
nunofs - 5, $10.50
natehanson - 10, $21
Cliff Tishler - 1, $2.10
jmkeary - 5, $10.50
me - 10, $21
Oops - what do you know - there is a difference. Sorry about that - didn't mean to rip anyone off. Thanks for keeping me honest Nuno! Please use these figures instead.
