Two coral heads ripped off the hammer coral in my 92 some time in the last 24 hours.

I'd snap a picture, but my lens is in the shop. :(

Whodunit? I've put them in the order I think, but looking for input

Flame angel who has been reef safe for over a year in my tank?

Emerald crabs? About a half dozen in the tank, but plenty of algae for them to eat

Cleaner shrimp?

Coral Banded shrimp?

Red legged hermits?

Purple tang?

Yellow tang?

Scooter blenny?

LM Blenny?

False percs?

Blue chromis?

I think I'm going to need a fish trap.....

Input please, confirm my fears......

Even though its been that long I thought flame angels were prone to munching on LPS?

My guess would be one of the emerald crabs. Same thing happened to me on a hammer....cauight the little bugger!

I'm going with the Flame Angel, Jay. I've heard of them being reef safe for a while, and then...."ooh, coral, I like coral!" I'd keep my eye on him for sure.

But.......I remember Liam had a Lawnmower Blenny a while back that ate coral, can't remember what type of coral it was. Our LM is nothing but a model citizen however.

And as I mentioned in the past, I watched a huge emerald crab chow on my zoos as soon as it was dropped in the tank but we've had them since then and I have not witnessed anything like that again.

You could always just wait and see who gets fat. :D

When in stress, hammer coral will shed all the flesh on a head and the flesh will float to a new location to settle as a new colony. So the bad guy may be you, Jay.

Lets see, you came home Sunday with a whole bunch of stuff so my guess is:

The wife

With scissors

in the fish room.

Let me know if I win.;)

A couple of weeks on a lumpy couch?

Remember always....cash is nearly untraceable on the reef.....and what you buy on the reef, stays on the reef! :p

I'm going to give the flame angel a time out in the sump and see what happens from there.....anyone near Metrowest with a fish trap?

If you are willing to travel to Boston, I have just made a fish trap to try and catch a damsel out of my tank. The little bugger won't go near it, but I can't keep the Coral Beauty or the Lawnmower Blenny out of it! Probably will work great for the Flame Angel. I'd come to you, but I don't have a car. Here is a pic.

I agree. Polyp bailout I think it's called. Happened to me with frogspawn. lost about half a dozen heads before I figured out they were too high up and getting too much light.

We have a fish trap. Located in Littleton just off 495.

Lenny, the blenny, has a taste for sps but he doesn't go near our torch. When he mucks with the sps he sucks the flesh off but he seems to have found something else to eat because the corals are recovering.

If the heads look broken off, blame a fish. If the heads look like they were plucked or shaved, blame fallout.

Let us know what you decide. Now I'm curious.

There are three heads, all at the same height in the water column.

One head is whole, one is absolutely down to the skeleton, and one has maybe one or two polyps left....polyps that look shredded.

I'm thinking fish......

It's too bad, because the flame made a nice red color splash in the tank, and will be difficult to replace color-wise

That was an expensive meal......about 16 bucks if you count 2/3 of a 25 dollar frag......

Ooh, that's too bad Jay. Have you seen anything yet?

all evidence is circumstantial, but the flame has been convicted. I'm judge, jury and relocator. Once it's captured, it's going into the 'mean' tank (my 72) to see what havoc it will cause there.....

i am having the same thig going on with me. but it is most of my heads.... im guessing poor water quality or too much light or bad flow on mine cause i know there is nothing picking at mine. i went away for a bit so i am gonna guess the water quality.... might also be an old rodi unit im useing....

good luck with that
