my friend works the gambling boat out of Lynn. He said he will start getting me water when they are out. Does he need a pump? Can he just drop some buckets and let them fill? What do I have to do as far as filtering the water before putting it in my tank? Thanks

Watch out for all the oil and sludge that form a slick and hang out near any boat that is sitting still for even a little while.
not to mention if they purge the head :D

I have started the change to natural saltwater. I did 10gl in my 54 corner tank. the corals look a little better.I will be doing 10gl a week. The water gets filtered thru carbon for a day i test the cal alk and bump if needed but all in all i think this is the way to go

My new spot
Right on the Brewster Dennis line, filtered over a DSB as it's collected :)

I've been tempted to head into Narragansett Bay to collect, did not see any references to the bay in the useful threads - any thoughts?

If your buddy is collecting off the gamling boat, I'd ask him to do it off the bow, while the boat is moving. When that boat is 3 miles offshore it's likely discharging all sewage directly overboard, so you're likely to get "a little something extra" if you're collecting aft of the discharge thru-hull.

When you say they look pretty happy, what exactly is most noticeable to you? Polyp extension, color? Would you consider the difference to be, somewhat noticeable, noticeable, very noticeable? How did the water look before and after filtering?
Thanks

If you can see a difference between before and after filtering your in the wrong spot.

I have to agree W/ Jim
If I was collecting from a spot that I felt NEEDED to be filtered, I'd not be collecting.

Marc,
What do you use for a pump/power supply?

It's a Ridged from HD I think it's 1/2 HP on an Inverter,
Fills my 210 in about 14 minutes.

I would think collecting from the top of the water would be the wrong spot regardless of the area.
Marco, dont you need a boat to collect from the ocean :D

i filter it just to be safe. I test all levels before filtering and they are at 0 niti, nita, amon, these need bumping up cal,alk and mag but i run carbon on the water for a day or two first. Color looks alot better plus polyp extension

Kevin, you will find that the bay is generally a bad area to collect. There (unfortunately) is literally tons of effluent runoff, from water 'treatment' plants, fertilized lawns, overflowing storm drains, boats, etc.
You'd need to get a bit off Newport to get the worst of the (literally) crap out. After a rainstrom is a real no-no......

Thanks Jay, I should have been more specific. I am planning to go past Newport into the ocean.
This is me being jealous.....because you can do that :D
When you said 'in the bay.....'
The cool thing is I could get water PRETTY close to where Marc gets his.....then haul it home 2 hours
Marc, are you oceanside or bayside on that collection trip? Looks like bayside to me......I may ask to tag along if you ever do that on a weekend.

Actually there is a high current spot past the bridge in newport that is very clean, Its actually a popular diving spot and hosts a mini reef. I call it house on the rock because there is , you guessed it a house on the rock however, If i was to collect water at all in RI I would do it during the winter months when the water isn't getting as much "action" Between people littering, peeing at beaches in it, sewer treatment, boaters, and the providence river there are times when the bacteria gets so high they close down beaches.

A good place i think it will be between east matunuck state beach and watch hill, go when the tides come in.

I collected 10 gallons at high tide yesterday. Did a 6 gallon change today on my 40 gallon breeder.
Collected from the oceanside of Nahant Beach at high tide. Waded out waist deep and filled two homer buckets. When I got them home and inspected the water, had plenty of hitch-hikers. Small shrimp (?) and Small Fish (1/8").
will keep the forum updated.

I collected today also,
Awesome morning 8:00 high in pleasant bay I was there at 7:00.
Pumping though so no fish food as a "bycatch"
Too bad too I've got a Lion, a Trigger and an Eel that would have loved me for it.

Hi Jay sorry for the late response here ...(just noticed this)
We are on the Bay, this is about 3 miles from my house out on "the flats" in between quivet and sesuit. And sure!
I'm not sure I'm lovin it anymore though. Going out is great, being there is great, the collecting is great but coming off the beach and driving home with 3/4 of a ton of water in the back and 15psi in the tires... I'm thinking it's only a matter of time before I peel one off a rim :D

Your right Marc......Not good for the sidewalls at all!!! You have good reason to worry!!!! Just have a good spare & jack!!:p

They are 8 ply discoverers and they do reasonably well but at $250 each plus the cost of a rim, I think I'd rather limit the weight carried on my over sand trips to a 12 pack and a set of boccie balls. :p
For 30 bucks, you can buy a compressor at sears to pump your tires up when you come off the sand. Mine plugs right into a power outlet in my truck. You'll wait a bit while they pump up a 17" tire, but you're on "Cape time" when you're out there anyways......so who's keeping track? :D You will drastically shorten your tire life driving any distance at all with 15 PSI in your tires.

CTIS (central tire inflation system). I know its $$$ but it would be too cool to drive there with fully inflated tires and push a button and down to 8 psi we go then hit the road on the way out and hit another button and back up to full PSI.

Water temps are coming down, no more lawn treatments, no more tourist stress on the septic systems, less boat traffic.......
MMMMM Just in time too, Two buckets a week of TM is getting old!
it's good to have our beaches back.....
I might try it myself later on this year

That would be "NO", and I avoid 28 like bubonic plague for the 9 week 'hell season'
Since I'm hauling the trailer this weekend, I might do some collecting. We'll see how my back and level of motivation hold up......
