This might be a major newbie question.
But,I have this reddish felt looking stuff growing along with the purple coralline algae(small patches). It's definetly not cyano(I know what that looks like).:D
There's a patch of it on the LR and some on the Koralia power head.
I dose B-Ionic 2 part and keep my DKH at 10 and my calcium around 400.
The only other thing I dose is Kent strontium once in a while.I have purple coralline starting to encrust my heater, powerheads and skimmer powerhead.
Is this good,bad or indifferent?

Nobody knows?
I found this on another website. It pretty much looks like the stuff on my LR(color) except mine is very short like red felt.
They really didn't know what it was on the other site also.
Gee........too bad RC is down.

Looks like red hair algae. Why do you dose strontium? Do you test for it?

Looks like cotton candy algae. Conchs are the good solution if that is the case.

Cheetos,
It's really short....like felt.
I dose Strontium because a LFS employee told me it was like the miracle solution for reef tanks when I first got into the hobby.
I only dose a cap full every other week between water changes to get rid of it.Have you seen what a Strontium test cost?.....Yikes.
Flighty,
Cotton candy algae?
Hmmmmmmm...I'll have to look that up and see if there's some pictures of it.
See if it matches what I have.I just picked up a Foxface the other day.
I didn't get it for the algae, just because I love the way they look. But hopefully it will take a liking to that short red stuff.

I have the same algae in my tank. Large Mexican Turbo are the most effective controls but the smaller turbo snails from the Indo-pacific are also able to control it if it has not spread throughout your tank. Manual removal is generally ineffective as it fragments the algae enabling it to colonize other areas in your tank.

Also see if you can grab some of these frome someone. They like the cotton candy and ther reproduce in our tanks, so they are a superb clean up critter

I have a large zebra turbo in there and it hasn't found the patch of it yet.
It's slowly moving that way though. The strange thing about this stuff is it will grow even in high flow.I'll snap a few pictures this weekend if I have a chance.I even have some on the top of my Koralia 1.It's not everywhere, just some on the rocks and that powerhead.Last night while doing my flashlight check I noticed one of the emeralds munching on it.
Stomatella snails, they sound like a great addiction to a reef tank.
Small, reproducing that eats microalgae, what a bargain. Now if I could just find some to put in the tank. Not much of a selection yet for snails around here at the LFSs.Come to think of it I don't think I've seen any of that particular snail for sale.

This is a Koralia #1 I have on a side panel of my 55 gal.
You can see that this stuff isn't afraid of water flow.
You can also see it grows right over purple coralline.
I've read on RC that it's called Red turf algae and can show up in newer tanks and can be hard to get rid of.Nothing short of a wire brush will take that red felt off that powerhead.I also have it on a few rocks and my heater.
I've heard that raising the MG weakens it enough that the blenny and rabbit fish will be able to rip it off.
Like one other reefer told me. " if you can count how many turbo's you have, You don't have enough"
