Decided to cut loose a small budding ricordia yuma this morning from its momma.

Bottom side of the coral. Trying to size up where to start cutting.

Success. Mother and baby are separate.

Back in the tank. A little slimed up from the stress.

Did you say a free yuma? I'll take it! :D

Great piece and good job cutting it.

Trick is keeping the frags healthy with really good water flow over the next few days.

Beautiful coloring on that yuma Mike
?
why did you use a dremel? rather than a scalpel/ clean razor blade?

Hi Dawn.

If you look at post #5, you can see the 'foot' of the baby had already separated from the mother. There was no need to cut it away.

From past experience, when you cut the polyp away it takes a long time for the cutting to firmly attach. Other Ricordia might be different, this one takes forever to attach.

I've had better luck when they can hold onto some of its original substrate.

Thanks Mike ;)
I noticed the rock but could not judge the depth of it ;)
to me it looked like it would have been an easy cut with a sharp razor which was why I ?ed the dremel but I see what you mean now

nice yuma mike. awesome color.

I usually just take my bone cutters and cut the rock off with the mouth and tissue. I havent had a problem with my fla rics...is there any difference with yumas? are they more difficult when proping?

Thanks Steve.

The trick is to keep damage to a minimum, if they get too stressed they have a tendency to melt. IME, once they start to go downhill they're pretty much gone.

I've had the best luck getting a new single edge razor, turning the coral over and cutting a section of the foot from the main mushroom. That cutting eventually becomes a new polyp. It takes months before it grows to be the size of the frag that Joe (sod) has now.

I've been tempted to slice it up like a pizza, as I've been told that as long as each cutting has a section of the existing mouth, it will survive. Having lost 2-3 of these to melting, I'm not brave enough to do it (yet).
