I'm planning to order 6" Acrylic Tubes for my calcium reactor. It's 1/4" thick.

Price is $9.23 per foot (plus shipping). If anyone is interested in joining me let me know.

Hey Armando, yeah, I'll jump in on this with you. I'm good for 2.5 feet, I'll PP you when you are ready to order, just LMK

In order to make this easier, I think we should order 3 ft per person. This would allow us to build 2x18" reactors, which is what I am planning to do.

The reason is that these tubes are sold in 6 ft sections.

More information on this:

The 6ft section shipped is $55.38 + $14.01 (shipping) = $69.39

So if you're planning to build the reactor, the price of 3 ft for your tubes is $34.70 shipped

I'm planning to place the order on Saturday. If you want to paypal me, the total is $36.

Piscevore,

if you are willing to cut down on your 2.5 to 2, i would take the other 4'.

Armando,
What is the outside measurement? we have to make sure the plumbing supply we buy will fit them. Calciumbuf has a very comprehensive list of items needed.

Sounds good. Pay pal sent.

Pinkskunk the OD is 6" and the ID is 5 3/4"

If the wall is 1/4 the ID would be 5 1/2.

gotcha so in this case the wall is 1/8"

if we want 1/4" thick the price for 6 ft is $73.11, so that would be approx $10 more per person (around $46)

Is there a group discount on this?

Armando

i'm not sure if would get any discount. shipping could get cheaper as more people order, depending on how they calculate it.

Not to be a PIA, but would it be easier to just order individually and have them shipped to our own houses?

Armando

You need at lease someone else to order with you, because they come in 6 ft sections (the 1/8" thick). The 1/4" thick you can order 36" long.

The price I listed above for the 1/4" thick is not right that's actually the price for 36", so that is very expensive.

Gotcha.

Armando,

Do you know if this is cast or extruded? I would like to get a 6 ft length if it's 1/4 wall cast.

Thanks,

Jim

Jim, the 1/4" is cast, but as I corrected above, it is very expensive ($73.51+SH for 3' long)

Cast tubing is not necessary, imho, on these reactors. I don't think 1/8" is going to be a problem either, I am content with what I have ordered. I priced this out on MacMaster and also savko a while ago, and the prices are the same everywhere. I didn't buy because of the six foot increments, so I jumped on the opportunity to split both shipping and not have extra.

yes let's make sure it'll be OK to use 1/8" extruded for this before we order it. i don't want to order it if it may cause problems later, i'd rather spend a bit more and get the right material.

Granted the pressure involved does not require 1/4 inch thick acrylic 1/8 is sufficient.
Where 1/4 wins on two criteria
1. Much easier to drill and tap, believe me I shattered more that one of the EBAY tubes purchased last year

2. more gluing surface on the 1/4 inch stuff

in this case, I'd say it may not be cost efficient to buy the 1/8", since a shattered tube could require replacement and drive the cost much higher if we buy the 1/4" in first place. Am i right?

It is your call, but doing it right the first time usually saves both time and money.
It CAN be done with 1/8" thick tubes, I've made a bunch out of those EBAY tubes.
You just have to be VERY VERY carefull when drilling, tapping and assembling the units.
One little slip and that tube is toast

I have used extruded tube on projects in the past (not aquarium related) we found with time it developed stress cracks and in some cases resulted in failure. I'm not saying 1/8 wall extruded will not work but I will only use 1/4 wall cast. I think if you look at any of the quality manufactures it's what they use.

after i looked at my current reactor tonite, i have second thought on the tube due to both, the pricing and need to build another. Sorry but i will withdraw my interest. i hope i did not mess you up.

anyone else interested in tubes, either 1/4" or 1/8"?

OK I tried to get a quote for shipping from McMaster-Carr site for 1/4" tubes however it won't allow me unless I place the order.

Since they provide the option to buy a 36" tube I don't see the purpose of having this group buy. It was originally intended to resolve the problem of having only the option of buying 72" tubes (1/8").

So because there will be no benefit in ordering as a group I am going to cancel the group buy and anyone can order individually.
