I went over the top with my 125g (can't see them with the hood) - to avoid drilling as many holles aspossible. I have 1" PVC thatthen divides down to (3) 3/4" feeds w/ball valve on each. At the end of each 3/4" feed is a 12" flex tune with 3" flare nozel.
I can adjust the flow to each, and point them anywhere I want.
In the picture you can see (2) of the 3/4" feeds

Here's a better pic, the return comes from the far end of the tank. The draisn are at the far end too. I'm using an Iwaki 70 - getting a little over 1400g per hour. Drains are 1.5" bulkheads, one of these can't keep up with 1400pgh.

One thing to keep in mind if you drill...if it's a return from the sump what is going to prevent the water from draining the tank in a power outage? The two lower returns in your picture would be a problem.
