finish for canopy

I just finished building first oak canopy. What do most people use for a finish?
Can i just use a regular poly or should i use something like a spar varnish? any suggestions?

I have used a water base poly. I woulod give it at least 2 coats and sand between each.

Don't use spar varnish. It doesn't give a hard finish.

Regular polyurethane is fine. Best of all is a Epifanes varnish. It's a little pricey though.
