Before I plunge $149 at the store, I thought about checking here.
Tried eBay but the prices are not great there.

yeah. xbox, playstation, gamecube, all those game systems are becoming pretty cheap. $149 is nothing compared to the thousands you've spent on your fish tanks. hehe ;)

i don't understand why someone bids $130 (after shipping) for a used refurbished system while you can get a new one at the store for $149. I guess $19 is a big deal for them. All right I am bitter because I was outbidded :D

I would buy the new one. The price only dropped about a month ago. Most of us paid $300 for these things. You will get the warranty with new, they are still having power supply problems with these.

I need to make a backup ;) of the games
Ah ok :) I make "back ups" of my DVDs all the time ;)
You just can not play on Xbox Live if you mod the box, unless you get the one with the switch to turn it on and off so it cant be detected

That should be fine, i don't really plan to get xbox live. i'm such a bad player it wouldn't be much fun to play against other people. i'd never win :)

I've done 2 mod chips on Xbox's. Well worth it. I did get booted from Xbl but that was because I was an idiot and didn't disable the modchip before signing on, you actually can still use live with a modchip. I ordered both of them from http://www.divineo.co.uk
Xbit is on my xbox and the xecuter 2.3b no-solder on one of my buddies. Isn't a very complicated process, but finding media to work in the newer drives was a bit annoying. Any questions about modchips feel free to ask! :D

Got the xbox today. When I open the box, there was a live cockroach in it.
Is that what they call "Xbox Live"?
Makes you wonder where that came from, I would call and complain or something. God forbid there are any eggs or more of them, that is one thing you do not want :(

That's the free bonus game, whack a cockroach, the XBox Live edition. Modeled after the very popular whack a mole game series, whack a cockroach pits the XBox gamer against the ultimate survivalist. Your arsenal of weapons include a shoe, frying pan, fly swatter, and the ever popular 400 watt Metal Halide Bug Zapper.

The system is #@*% freaking defective, it would stop working after 1 hour of use. I called and asked for a refund. Will buy a new one at the store.

Hey guys, a couple things...1) a lot of people work really, really hard to make the games that you play -- it may be easy to steal them but that doesn't make it right and 2) please refrain from discussing potentially illegal activities in posts on this board (for our safety as well as yours). I know mod chips aren't illegal, but we all know their true purpose is to enable you to steal and I'd rather not see discussions about any of it on this board if you don't mind. There are plenty of discussion boards on the Net where you can discuss mod chips.
Sorry if this is coming across harshly, but being in the industry has made me pretty sensitive to the issue.

wow it looks like the stores are no longer offering a free game with the console. well i guess that's ok, those games are usually crap anyway.

Hi Joe,
I looked at Mod chips for my XBox. To be perfectly honest, I was looking at them so I could dual boot into Linux. That $175 XBOX ($150 now) is one very inexpensive PC.
I do agree with you though on game copying. Bringing a computer game to market is not an insignifcant task, and more then one local gaming company has gone out of business.

Well you didn't ask for it, but I'm going to give me opinion anyways. Being that you are in the industry, you should know of the massive amounts of ******** games that one must wade through to find anything decent. I own a games freedom pass to Blockbuster, so I have access to whatever game I want, whenever I want, to try it out (or keep it for as long as I want at $20/month). Sometimes I don't feel like going to the video store, or the game has been rented every time I go there, so I've downloaded it, and if I like it I'll typically buy it.
Microsoft was idiotic to ban people with modchips. They have to purchase the games to play Xbox live (downloaded games do NOT work on XBOX live), so they are banning people with modchips and effectively eliminating the only reason they have to actually BUY the games. I understand they don't LIKE modchips, but the rationale behind their actions is non-sensical.
I've bought and suffered through well more than my fair share of titles over the years, and it has gotten out of hand with how bad and incomplete some of these games that come out are. If developers want their games to sell, they need to worry less about how many 14 year old kids that can't afford to buy the game in the first place download it, and more about making it worthwhile for consumers to spend their hard earned money on it.
