has anyone seen the lights that have a stainless steel top to them that is just like a curved peice of stainless steel sheet metal that makes a nice modern looking light/hood together...has anyone tried to make one of these themselves and had a peice of metal cut and curved to fit over their tank/light?? I'm thinking about trying it it looks really nice on the hanging fixtures i'm hoping that the corners of the metal with the curve will fit nicely into the corners of my tank and curve over to the bank and then i can cut out any notches for the hob stuff.....LMK if anyone has done yet please.
thanks-nate

I just bought a new MH fixture for my tank and I did alot of looking around before I bought. I have not seen any fixtures that are like what your looking for. What kind of lights are you looking for. Metal Halide, PC, T5? I would think that there might be an issue of heat transfer to the outside of the fixture on high heat lamps unless it was well insulated between the exterior and the lamps.

I don't know what exactly what the name of the light was...i'm pretty sure it was MH setup...it was like an arching lamp shade for the fixture from front to back curved over the top of the fixture...it was definitely a hanging fixture i remember looking at a whole bunch of modern light stuff on reef central and seeing it...let me look again and i'll come back and post again...

Sounds like a reflector with no box to put it in.

Sounds like a Giesemann or Aquamedic setup. The only person I have seen make anything like that is willray
Here are a few of his DIY threads

You are either going to have to roll the sheetmetal first or make a frame with strategically placed braces for it to keep the curve "straight" once you start cutting notches in it. Plus trapping the humidity coming of the tank will be a PITA in my opinion.

well it wasn't the geismann or teh aquamedic but they did look a little like what i was referring to...i couldn't find the thread on RC that I had looked at before even though i haven't looked that hard because I'm at the office right now...What i was hoping to do is measure and cut the sheet metal flat, roll it so it has a nice bend to it that i need, tack some small solid tube braces across it (probably 3 L, R, C) then drill the top and attach a fixture, notch out the HOB slots and attach some steel cables to hang it L, R, C
(condensation might be a POA but maybe i can cut some vents or something in it....here is a quick sketch on paint :p
not sure if its letting me upload it...lets see.

heres the link for the store bought...its ADA brand-sick stuff but i'm pretty sure with a regular MH pendant or a t5 strip you can achieve the same thing....any suggestions or ideas on how to?

The radius hood can be done and has been by me.No braces or frame are needed as the 18 ga S.S. with the arc is rigid as a mofo.Evaporation won't be a problem either. You could always incorporate a small fan or 2.I have 4 fans in my hood.

Are you building a hood for the tank or a cover for a light fixture?

You could buy a peice of round steal tube...Slice it in half the long way & tack some ends on it. from sheared stock...They probably make it out of stainless & alluminum...I know someone way back made one from a large diameter PVC pipe... Jeremy from CRA & Steve made it at Jeremy's shop...
That was probably like 4 years ago... Not sure if the thread was here or on the forum @ RC

good idea with the metal tubing...I was thinking i could make it both...a cover for the light and a hood for the tank, but I don't think thats going to work because the MH pendant is going to get way too hot underneath and subsequently my water so i'm going to have to hang it and at least it will block out/direct some light...

hood is being made hopefully today...18ga stainless, 34" long, 12" depth, 5" tall, hopefully it comes out sweet, i might even get a little crazy and have a water jet cut out some sweet designs on it....Will be posting pics tonight if i get it!

its looks almost exactly like that picture above but the pendant i have is a bit smaller than that one in the pic so it looks a tad bit different but still really cool.
