I've left numerous messages, can't ever get a call back. That's ok, they are evidently busy with their existing customers. I can purchase my new cube and stock it from a lfs in MA, I had just heard great things about them and was willing to drive the 2 hours for exceptional service, but about 6 e-mails over the last month and 4 voicemails and they apparently don't feel it important to provide customer service.

Pm sent with my appologies, but lets get real here I answer my phone here all day during business hours which are clearly posted on my website, and have not recieved one email from you ever, you also could have sent me a private message here on boston reefers before posting this complaint, which you never did either. There was several ways of getting in touch with me. people do it all day long. Again I'm sorry you have had trouble getting a hold of me. 603 893 8126 Be here all night. Sincerly Jay...

Get in your car and take a drive! Geeze, Jays is a retail store. repeat, retail! Stop wasting time with emails and phonecalls. I own a retail store and all day long lazy people email or try to call instead of just going shopping. We have customers in the store. If we fielded every phone call or email, we could never get anything done. IMO, there is nothing worse than someone who calls all day and is too lazy to go shopping. Now I know Jay won't say anything because he's a great guy, but come on, to complain becuae a retail store doesn't answer YOUR email. Get a life.

I usually don't get sucked into replying to these threads, but in this case I can make an exception.:) Jay's is my LFS, and I have been nothing but impressed at the customer service that I recieve. Jay has recently packed up and moved into his new store just down the road from the old one. A monumental task unto itself. Think of how much fun it is to break down your tank and move it.... now multiply by 100. Nevermind making sure all the livestock are cared for, all the work is being done at the new place, utilities are in place etc. etc. etc. If you have been to Jay's new place then you know the amount of work that has gone, and still goes into that place on a daily basis just to establish a foothold and open the doors to serve his customers. Someone earlier referred to Jay's being a retail store. Have you any clue what is involved in a retail operation? When I go there it is usually Jay or his dad running the store. Sometimes there is an extra hand. Many times there is not. So one person to multitask the opening, lighting, cleaning, feeding, maintenance, ordering, recieving, stocking, invoice paying, etc. etc. etc. all while providing IMO exceptional customer service and taking the time to explain things or answer questions like a walking encyclopedia. Hmmm.... can't imagine why a phone call or e mail may go unanswered occasionally. There is an old saying that goes "You can't please em all" Sorry you had a bad experiance, but to bash Jay on BRS is wrong and probably unwarrented. IMO Jay's is the LFS others should model themselves after. Staggering inventory, healthy corals and great customer service!! Win win in my book. So, the lights are off, the stage is empty and it's time for me to climb down off my soapbox. Besides I have to go wash my nose now!!!!! Peace.

I agree with Jeff 100%, well said and I couldn't of said it any better. Also for all the times I'm in Jay's and when the phone rings he or his father always answer no matter how busy they are.

I have called Jays many times and asked if he had something in stock that I needed and always got ahold of him or his dad. And also Jays is my LFS where I buy just about everything for my tank,

I very much get the point.

First, why don't I just drive? It's more than 2 hours away. I needed info clarified, this is a right of any retail customer.

He does not NEED by business, I very much understand this. I merely wanted to start using the facility for all of my aquatic needs.

Who knew I would be causing such a drama. I managed service departments in high end retail corporations, and return customers and WOM are usually what retail company's thrive on and flourish.

I merely stated I couldn't get through.

Jay said there was an issue with the answering machine. There's nothing saying a customer has to be available during store hours, hence the ability to call and e-mail. This did not work, you've all made your point in not the nicest of ways. So if I just say you are right, this can end here.

This wasn't meant to turn into an argument, I don't have the time or desire to do so. Last I checked, the public was able to voice something saying hey, can't get ahold of you and that's all I did. Constructive criticism. I'm more than happy to take the thousands we all spend in this hobby and keep it local.

So for all those I offended by merely reaching out - sorry.

Looking forward to checking out the new store. I am sure Jay is busy but I see calling a store before you drive two hours. This comment was a bit harsh, especially the "get a life".

Anyway, LFS maintenence is very demanding, especially with the amount of tanks jay has. So I see him being very busy. I just was urked by this post. You can make a point without getting rude. Customer service is all facets, so to say that someone is lazy for calling is just wrong.

I would have pm'd first. lol

Edit: Sorry Jay for posting things like this in your forum. I feel that the vendor forums should be your own lil section to promote your business or for friendly chat. Not bickering and cluttering a vendors section

The point is, Jays is a retail store, not an online store. If an online store did not answer emails, I might get concerned and complain. Customer service is NOT all facets as you describe. Lazy customers want to shop over the phone or email instead of treking over to the store to check out inventory. Or they call for store hours EVERY time they want to come down (instead of learning them or going to the website to get them. A retail store is not set up to answer phone calls or emails all day. Customers should realize that they are interrupting customers who made it down to the store. Is that fair? In my retail store I get calls all day from people who want to ask 100's of questions and have me describe, look up or price EVERY item I have in stock. In the meantime, I have customers waiting at the register waiting to pay. Honestly, I just don't answer the phone anymore. Bottom line is for someone to complain that Jay didn't answer (also when he actually did) is downright ridiculous.

Not trying to start any drama here just putting in my 2 cents. I went to jay's a couple of weeks ago because i heard all these great things about him and his store so i decided to check it out. I live about 2 hours from there so i can't take a weekly trip up there. Well i decided to go and was excited because i was going to go into this great big store but i wasn't impressed at all. I don't think his coral selection was good at all especially SPS corals. Seen a lot of dying or diseased fish i was like eek! I dunno everyone has there own opinion and to each his own but i didn't find that store that great at all. Guess i was just a little disappointed because everyone on here talks like its the greatest store ever.

Are you sure you were at the right store??? The guy has well over a dozen tanks of coral alone. Sounds like you may have been in another store to be honest.

um no thank you i ain't no retard i know what store i was in yea he has a lot of tanks with corals in it but the corals are nothing great at all nothing popped out at me and half of his brains were dead with green hair algae on it. The other thing i couldn't stand were some tanks in there were gross.

Unfortunately you're a bit out numbered by most peoples satisfaction with the corals, stock and customer service in the Salem NH area. I hope you have better luck to find a better store within 2 hr plus drive further from Jays as far as price, quality and selection. As we all know how tough the hobby is, I don't think you'll find any exotic fish store that's perfect in every tank. If it means one less customer then it's unfortunate for Jay:( but good for me, one less person that will buy the coral I'd be eyeing next time I'm there. :)

Im a 2 hour drive from Jays too. The store is not perfect 100% of the time, who is. Most of the times I have been there the store is great. Im in Maine and there is nothing like Jays here. His prices are incredable and well worth the drive. I too have seen dirty tanks and hair algae on corals there but this is rare. I cant imagin the upkeep on all thoes tanks, one is enoughf for me. If you google Salem NH you will find other stores and things to do, I try to make a day of it.

like i said its just my opinion. The fish store that i go to barely has really dirty tank, dieing corals or sick fish. Not going to mention it to start more drama. I'm just saying i don't like his store. Just let me have my own opinion i don't know why all kinds of people have to come on here and stick up for the guy like you guys are his attorney in court or something. All im saying is his store is no where what is it hyped up to be on here.

I was in the store yesterday and looks at things really closely after reading this thread, everything looked great!

All the fish looked very good and the corals were looking super as well, the place is loaded with stuff. Not sure what was happening the day you were there but it was not the case yesterday. I am pretty critical as you all know as well :)

Jay's Aquatics has established a very good client based reputation within the area. So if there's any "defense" it's based the same as how you'd possibly react to any negative response upon a post of the fish store you go to as mentioned above.

I was in there the other day looking for salt and water... Only bad thing was the RO/DI system was being replaced which who cares I survived. The waterfall system had a ton of amazing looking clowns with one that had some variations in the bars and I saw a tank with at least 10 of the nicest purple tangs I've seen in a LFS.

People are allowed to have a bad day and I think the few bad day's Jay's has are still better than good days at a few other LFS's...

One of the reasons I love Jay's so much is that none of the employees there are jerks. They're very easy to work with, very helpful, and won't try to screw you over. They're very accomodating and they don't give off the sense that they're in it just to be a money-making business. It's more like they exist because they truly love the hobby and because they want to share that.
