We need everyones help!!! Every store does... We just found out that congress is trying to pass a law on the 23rd of this month to shut down all importing of live animals fish and corals included. All animals must come from the usa only. Please go to www.nohr669.com and send in tons of emails or phone calls to stop this or else every store will be shut down and our wonderful hobby will be non existant... Thanks kim

There is a good link in the other thread about this to send an email to your congressperson.

Merged all threads. Please don't start the same thread in 4 different forums.

Thanks

I already wrote to the congressman and will be calling later. I will be writing and calling every day. Did not realize everyone already knew about this we just got the call from one of our shippers. I just got a Moorish Idol that is eating like crazy in my tank and now they want to take it away not to mention we cant even trade corals anymore since if you dont own it before the bill passes you cant own it after.

I just sent a letter.
I think Congress has done enough damage to this county already.

But Liam don't be so quick,
You are assuming they read bills before voting on them.
I agree if they took time to read and understand it would never pass but
That's a stretch of an assumption these days.
So ...that's why it's important to make some noise and get them to understand it before voting.

I for one think the bill (http://www.govtrack.us/congress/billtext.xpd?bill=h111-669)
is good in concept:

"The purpose of this Act is to establish a risk assessment process to prevent the introduction into, and establishment in, the United States of nonnative wildlife species that will cause or are likely to cause economic or environmental harm or harm to other animal species’ health or human health."

On what scientific basis the Secretary of the Interior uses to deem the risk high or low is concerning. Note that as Liam said, negative impact on the U.S. economy will be weighed in any decision about a particular trade species. It doesn't mean you're going to have to get rid of your Irish Wolfhound, but it may mean you can't keep koi (carp), already implemented in Maine for example.

None of you, and most likely none of your children, will ever see a mature American Chestnut, a tree that dominated eastern forests until the Chestnut blight at the turn of the century (1900). The fungus, from Asian Chestnuts planted in N.Y., eliminated all but the most resistant individuals. So instead of panic, perhaps consider the good implications of regulating certain imported species.

Finally, even the leaders of our own hobby advise against all but the most experienced reefers from keeping Moorish Idols, which currently have less than a 5% chance of surviving in most aquariums.

Oh that makes me feel sooooooo much better.
And what you call as a "good concept".
I call just another intrusion of a bloated and out of control Government.

Kind of agreeing with mako a little..In Florida Burmese and retic pythons are not indigenous. Now they are and they are taking over the wetlands. Whether it be from people just letting them out because they got too big or from hurricanes destroying stores and homes and then they get out, they are still getting out and can easily take down a person.

I do think the concept is good but the way they are doing it is bad. They are not limiting anything in this bill and that is the scary part. They need to list every animal that will not be allowed before anyone can truely whole heartedly agree with this bill. My opinion anyway for what its worth.

if we keep letting them pass more bills to HELP US we are going to wake up some day with no rights at all. I am sick of people trying to tell me what I can and cant do. How about they balance the budget before they tell me I cant have a fish. But then hey they all went to college so they must be smart right?
