this is rediculous. there are certainly some animals that should not be here, but seriously, what problems do clownfish, parrots, hampsters etc. cause? geesh
was it here that i saw the picture of the lion fish in florida that people released into the water?

I think that this is the point that many of these witnesses are making.
I don't hear any testimony so far saying that all imports should be banned.
JasonandRay
04-23-2009, 10:35 AM
saltwater fish are low risk we cant put them in lake they would die
Qwank
04-23-2009, 10:35 AM
ok, now it seems that they arent talking about ALL animals now. they have a high risk and low risk list i guess. it might not be too bad

Good Lord... is there a "reef industry" in Isreal??? It would be interesting to see how it works. I'm thinking, no, though.

You've got to understand, though, that it is a National Bill. They could survive in FLA and Hawaii.

So..... Isreal pays some bio grad student $150 to decide if the species is invasive?? An entire 10-12 hours
I'm thinking everything could be invasive in some state in the US.
Qwank
04-23-2009, 11:07 AM
I'm thinking everything could be invasive in some state in the US.
thats what the chair woman just asked. the guy who answered said it was unlikely and its would be more or about 10% of all current imported species would be blacklisted

It's a terribly invasion plant that grows all over the south. It grows on vines and is everywhere if you don't yank it out. Apparently, the grandfather of the Notre Dame professor was the one who brought it to the US.

Invasive where though. I can keep a loin fish here and if i put it in the harbor it will die. but if i do that in Florida it will survive. I think it needs to be done by region.

Reef related politics :p Notice I didn't pick sides...they're ALL acting like blowhards.
The 800 pound gorilla in the room none of these clowns seem to want to address is that there will be more government co$t$ for permit$ to make import$ of the$e $pecie$ po$$ible if thi$ pa$$es...making an imported fish or coral go WAY up.\
The idea of having to get a permit or microchip to move a clown to my brother's in RI is just STUPID, IMO

Aquadiva
04-23-2009, 11:54 AM
what do you guys think?
I think, as usual, this is going to be cluster. Can you imagine how long it is going to take to populate a list of allowable species?? At $150 a pop ( if you follow the Isreal method), that's a lot of coin. Add the wait, and the "permit" fees to move an animal across state lines to prove ownership?? What a nightmare. :( Our government in action. I'm so proud.

All I've heard,or could make out from this thread is that it got shelved.
I guess it will come back up at a later date.
They agreed that the HR, as submitted, was too vague.
They also will consider making a blacklist, rather than banning everything, and havinbg exceptions made.
This will get tabled....for the longer it's tabled, the better.

Officially, yes. I'm sure there will be some behind the scenes maneuvering, before the next hearing.
