View Full Version : Dual In-Line TDS Meter?

So is anyone else interested in one of these?
http://www.freshwatersystems.com/products/index/p1228/1228/None/None
If we can get 10 people we save over $15 per unit ($22 vs $37). I don't know if any of our local vendors can get this at a competitive price but if the itnerest is there I'll make sure we go through channels to make sure everyone gets a crack at it.

Not to hijack the thread, but what about the handheld one instead?
joefitz
05-02-2004, 11:47 AM
I've already got a handheld...I just want the convenience of not having to find it and then take a few measurements... Feel free to start another thread, could be enough interest in each one.
Ah nice I posted that on RC but did not know know if I could say group buy
I am interested in one also

What does it test for?
joefitz
05-02-2004, 09:45 PM
TDS= Total Dissolved Solids...basically, it measures how "pure" your water is -- in this case, before and after treatment by your RODI unit. Water coming out of a DI stage should read 0 or 1 TDS. Anything higher is an indication that the membranes need to be replaced.
I was going to purchase one exactly like that. Good thing I procrastinated. I'm in for one.
Scuba_Dave
05-02-2004, 10:38 PM
Interesting, I've got a hand held unit
Actually....I'm out.
After a little thinking, I've decided this is not a good way to proceed. A hand held will be more versatile if youre interested in measuring RO/DI, or just RO, or tap, or somebody else's water, etc.
I don't know if anyone else is in my shoes, but I figured I'll post my situation if it helps anyone.

Good question. I assumed that I would be ordering them and either distributing them at the next meeting or making them available for pick-up at my place. I'm also ready to order so I expect I'll be doing that today or tomorrow -- if anyone wants to back out, now is the time!

Want some $$$$$ ?
joefitz
05-11-2004, 06:23 PM
Ok, well, I just placed the order. I purchased 17 units so hopefully that is the correct amount. :-)
The total came to $382.85 including a $14.33 shipping charge and a $2.00 handling fee (each unit was $21.56). So, that means each person owes me $22.52.
I have a PayPal account, so you can send money to me that way ([email removed]). If you are using PayPal, you'll have to add their fee on to the total. They charge $.30 per transaction plus 2.9% of the payment. That means if you are paying via PayPal you need to send $23.50.
If you don't want to do PayPal then you can pay me upon pickup in cash or a check. I'll let everyone know when they arrive in case you want/need to pick it up from me here instead of at the next meeting.

I am leaving for a week on Thursday so I will not be available for pick-up -- I may see if I can get Scott to hold them in case somebody needs them prior to the meeting.
I'll post another message when they actually arrive (assuming I'm still here to pick them up).

The package arrived today, looks like all 17 units are there. I leave for Florida tomorrow so unless someone wants to pick it up tonight, you'll have to wait until I get back on the 27th. I expect to be at the meeting and if I am not, I will make sure somebody who is going will bring the goodies. Cash or check is fine -- the total was posted earlier in this thread. Or, as discussed earlier in this thread, you can pay via credit card (before the meeting) if you have or sign up for a paypal account.

Karl Wagner has been gracious enough to offer his assistance with distributing the TDS Meters at the meeting on Saturday. For those of you who don't know who Karl is, consider yourself lucky. Most people know him though so ask around and you're sure to find him. Bring cash or a check made out to me (Joseph FitzGerald) -- please try to bring exact change because I doubt Karl will be in a position to make it. If you're paying with cash $22.50 is fine to make things convenient...on the other hand, so is $23 or $25. ;-)
Have fun with them (I still haven't hooked mine up).

Unfortunately, I can't connect with Karl until Friday (he's traveling) so I won't be able to arrange pickups until after Friday. I work from home so I am available most times on most days. If you aren't going to be at the upcoming meeting, please contact me to make arrangements to pick up your TDS meter. A few people have asked if there are any extras so if you want to back out, let me know and I'll try to arrange an alternative buyer.

Next week is good anytime before Friday. I have a few things that will be scheduled at some point that I'll have to work around but in general I'm available anytime from 8am-midnight. If you give me a day/time I'll try to schedule my meetings around that time if possible.

Ok, just an FYI that I do have the TDS Meters again. Please post a note to this thread indicating if you are planning to pick the meter up at the next meeting or not. If not, please send me an email to arrange pick-up. If I don't hear from you, I am going to try to see if somebody else is interested in your TDS meter and they'll be up for grabs at the next meeting.
If you are planning on picking up your TDS meter, just send me a day/time that you'd like to do it and I'll let you know if it works. The only time that is definitely out at this point is Tuesday night from 6pm on. Day/night is fine by me. I live in Cambridge a few blocks outside Harvard Square and will provide directions to anyone that needs them. I may also be able to meet people at Skipton's and if there was a large enough group, at Tropic Isle in Framingham.

Just a quick question .... I got a unit with this exact meter on it (originally installed) .... IN is before the RO and OUT is just after the RO .... should I switch the OUT to the position just after the DI (product water) ....
Im sure it will give me a better determination of how pure my source water is BUT will this make it harder to determine when my RO membrane is spent.
Len
Deafasa
06-14-2004, 08:32 PM
Why not move the IN to just after the RO and OUT to just after the DI. Do you need to know how bad the incoming source water is?
lactrain
06-14-2004, 08:50 PM
Note: The NSF Standard for Percent Rejection is 75%. We recommend replacing the RO membrane once it tests at 80% rejection or lower.
I pulled that quote from the page linked at the begining of the thread .... this is the assumption I was under .... and that in order to determine that the ro membrane was in need of changing this is the math that would need to be done. Based on the before the RO and then the outgoing after the RO
Sure need some insight here ....
Piscevore
06-14-2004, 09:13 PM
yeah, you'd be testing the plain old tap water against the RO membrane... before and after...someone was suffering for palyotoxic shock or something
lactrain
06-14-2004, 09:18 PM
huh .... not quite the answer i was looking for .... but typical.
nickoz
06-15-2004, 10:16 AM
Edit: I should read the whole thread.... dup post..
-------------
I think it would be better to have the Meter-IN on the RO-OUT and the Meter-Out on the DI-OUT. IMO I dont see much value in continuously monitoring your TAP water. You really want to see if your RO and DI outputs TDSs increase to determine if your membranes need to be replaced.
-nick
lactrain
06-15-2004, 12:11 PM
Here is why I questioned it ..... Just recently I had to change my first two filters in my 4 stage RO/DI .... my TDS OUT after the RO was reading twice what it normally reads after 6 months of operation.
The Meter on the IN read twice what it normally reads so I took a guess and changed the first two stages and my TDS returned back to normal.
I could tell it wasnt a faulty RO Membrane (Chloromines) by the percentage of TDS it was pulling out.
Is this a true statement .... If my source water rises in TDS will the product water reading after my RO rise as well.

I was just reading. EPA states the max level of contaminents in secondary drinking water should not exceed 500ppm's.
That makes the 780 going in seem a bit scary.

Did anyone check the discrepency between the in and the out before installing this unit on your RODI lines? I poured a glass of tap water and pulled the probs out of the T-Connectors. I got a difference between the two probes of about 15PPM (220ppm In 205ppm Out). My hand held TDS meter also reads about half of what this reads (117ppm). Did anyone else notice any problems or check before installing?

Our dual is running good. I was reading numbers with hand held before adding the dual in line. They are running almost exactly the same as we are getting with the dual output meter. I do keep checking output with the hand held. I keep meaning to change the input to between the R/O and DI elements, but had not done it yet.
