Alk swings with all for reef

Our hobby grade test kits can show different results even when doing back to back tests. Identifying different shades of color can be difficult. 8.0 - 7.6 could be from test kit accuracy or testing errors.

For example, the “lab grade” Hanna marine master optical tester has accuracy of +/- 0.3 dKH.

Alkalinity, Marine Accuracy±0.3 dKH ±5 % of reading at 25 °C
±5 ppm ±5 % of reading at 25 °C

To eliminate some variables, test at the same time when you test and make sure the water is at the same level. This will eliminate test results that could be impacted by evaporation or salinity or tank activity. It could also be possible that pH is an issue. For example if testing after being at home all day versus testing after being at work all day. pH will be higher if you’re not at home and potentially increase coral growth and consumption.
