    Exclamation January 23rd 2010 Meeting

"In the beginning..." and "Before you throw that in your tank...(Part 1)"

    "In the beginning..."
With all of the new folks the club has brought on in the past few years, I thought it would be a good time for us to look back at our roots. Some of you may have been around since the BRS' very first meeting, others, may just be planning on coming to their first, plus every variation in between. No matter which of these categories you fall into, I am sure we can all get a kick out of hearing some of the stories about how this great club got it's start.

Moe Kirby (MoeK on the boards), a founding member, and indeed the BRS' very first president, has agreed to come and share a little of the club's background with us. Moe, again, has been around, and involved, with the club since it's infancy, and I am looking forward to hearing some of his stories, I hope you'll join us as well.

"Before you throw that in your tank...(Part 1)"
Every reefer has a responsibility to do their utmost to provide the best care they can for their reef and it's inhabitants. Step number one on any reefer's list should be proper treatment and quarantine practices for any incoming livestock. This is a pretty broad topic (or group of topics), so I think it will work best if we break it up into several smaller presentations. In "Part 1", we'll go over the very basics of incoming SPS coral inspection and treatment. In my personal opinion, at the very bare minimum, incoming SPS corals should be recieving both an Interceptor and a Betadine treatment. I'll go over how I go about this, what I use to do it, and why. I am no expert, and I can claim none of the credit for coming up with these treatments, but I'll try nonetheless to pass what I have learned along to those who remain unaware of these basic and important techniques in reefkeeping.

    Date: Saturday, January 23rd - Noon - 4 PM

Location: Lodge of Elks, 450 Union Ave, Framingham, MA

    Schedule
12:00-12:30 PM Meet and greet - new member sign up

12:30-1:00 PM or so - Announcements, raffle ticket sales, checkout the library etc.

1:00 PM - 2:30 PM - Moe's and Joe's BRS History Talk, and The Basic SPS Treatment Presentation (by me)

2:30 PM - Pizza and chat time

2:30-3:00 PM - Raffle drawing, frag swapping, and more general breeze shooting

These times are a general guideline and may vary as needed.

I hope you do. Like I said, I am no expert, but I think I can pass on the basics in this particular area of treatment. It is really simple and cheap to set up a treatment system, and these two treatments are pretty easy, there is no reason anyone who dabbles in SPS can't be doing it.

This will be an awesome meeting! I work on Saturdays but since it will be my slow time of year, I'll have to get out a little early to make some of this for sure.

It will be good to see you there Tom.

One hour special? Isn't one hour actually longer than you had your last tank up?

    hahaha good one Dave

Oh well, it was a good learning experience. I was going through a lot of issues at the time and had to do it. It was more like a year by the way

Once this one is setup, I think I will honestly be glad I went through what I did. I learned A LOT of lessons last time like buying cheaper equipment to get by and rushing with corals. Now I know what I want and know what NOT to do, mostly thanks to you all My tank will be much nicer in the end.

I know Tom, just messing with you.

It is true though, valuable lessons are learned that first time around, so you are ahead of the game now.

Okay, I know this is a stretch in asking this. What are the odds of having the meeting speeches video and posted? For those of us that can not make the meeting, but would like to hear what is said.

I do not want to put anyone out, but I am interested.

    This is just an inquiry.

A good question, but not the first time it has been asked, or thought about.

We have sporadically taped some of the meetings/lectures, but we have never really nailed down getting every one taped. An additional issue of course would be web side of things, and while I know it has been discussed, that is not my department, so I can't really comment on that side of things.

It is a good idea IMO, but the stars just haven't lined up to make it happen just yet.

Oops! It appears that it was only possible for me to use an animated GIF as an avatar due to my higher forum permissions level. Hey, what good is power if you can't flaunt it every once in a while, right?

I'm thinking seriously about attending my first BRS meeting, the weekends never work out right but this one should. I'm curious about the frag swap portion especially. It seemed straightforward, but then I see people posting frags with prices...is this just a good forum for buying/selling frags, or is it some sort of actual swap event? I don't have anything spectacular to swap, but could bring a frag or two of pink frogspawn, neon green sinularia, giant hairy mushroom or galaxea, maybe some basic tricolor acros.

How does the swap work, and do I have to announce what/how many frags I am bringing beforehand?

    Thanks

You should go, should be a good time.
The swap works as either trade or sell, you can post trade interest or a price.

As Kevin said, you should come, frags or no frags, the meetings are fun, and often educational.

As far as the frag swap goes, it is really up to you. You can list things for sale if you like, or offer them up for trades if that seems more interesting to you. I would however try and list things and your intentions for them prior to the meeting and try to work out arrangements with people ahead of time. Though there are occasionally people asking around for "extra" frags, and there are often one or two available, most of the frag swaps and sales are pre-arranged.

Hello and glad you'll be attending your first meeting! Here is a link to the "Frag Swap" thread. You can list what you'd like to sell or trade for the meeting, in that thread. You are also welcome to start your own thread in the BRS Marketplace and put a link to it in the "Frag Swap" thread.

I hope we have answered your questions. If not, feel free to post or PM me or another BoD member.
