27ish hours no electricity!

Uh huh...I hate NSTAR and my apartment complex! I thought I would feel better if I vented...it only makes me sadder..yesterday power out at around 10am. I am notified at approx 3pm and spent the night with no power-it was restored around 2pm TODAY!(BTW-according to NSTAR that is fast as humanly possible
Lowest temp was 68-and stayed there for quite a while...looks like water chnage city for the weekend for me. I owuld ask why me-but I know it's irony that I finally went grocery shopping and put non-fish stuff in the fridge or freezer RIP to those who already died...I guess IU should be ready to start fragging? I'm raising the temp back up really slowly. SHould I do really heavy wet skims? Large volume water changes?(I have a 55g display, 30 sump/fuge, 30L display, 55(brine hatchery...RIP those guys were the stinkiest!) a 20 something QT(RIP). When wil I begin to see the most effects if any(I figure colder is better than overheating...and don't ruin my fantasy!) I already am running carbon and a 2LF phosBan reactor. I want a cold beer...anyone have one?

I know that this is just a total wishful-thinking fantasy of mine, but... Whenever Nstar knows your power isn't going to come on for 24 hours, they should bring you a loaner generator!!!! You know, like when your car gets worked on, and they give you a free loaner - you just have to supply the gas.

I only had the battery back-up air stones and a propane heater(my mom bought me in case of mergencies) spent most of the night with that blaring at the water in the sump and manually added that water to the dispaly and other tanks. I also floated a lot of ziploc bags filled with really hot tap water and changed those out as soon as they began to cool down. SO far I have lost my zebra urchin(my favorite... very sentimental), diamond goby, blue stripped neon goby, a true perc, CBB, cleaner shrimp, a few pepps, both starfish...and a few hard corals are beginning to STN/RTN(dunno which ot call it?). Pearly jaw, lemon-lime?? wrasse, dragonette and one of my female anthias are looking quite stressed and so is my new clammy...We'll see what happens-can someone please bring me a COLD beer?? and lysol

Not looking too good. Usually losing fish like that is due to not enough oxygen not from a 10 or so degree drop in temp. Might want to get some more battery air pumps for the future. Hope things turn around for you

Thanks Mike, Jenn, Barry, Jay...everyone has their day right? I just hope to learn form this(AKA-I need a generator).

I did have an airstone in the 3 tanks with the livestock..brine shrimp I could care less about. Maybe I did something wrong though as well I dunno..I agree with the low O2 is most likely the casue of the fish deaths(that and 2 were brand new addtions and one was in QT for a reason). I coverd the tanks in pink insulation and blankets and left the glass tops on the display to preserve as much as I could..I sorta figured and honestly in hindsight didn't put too much thought into it, that with the airstone and me manually taking water from the sump and pouring it itno the the display that I was getting at least some circulation/air exchange. Also, I neglected a water change for a bit so I think my parameters weren't exactly where they should have been(I know the ph and alk were both low..didn't test for much else as I "planned" a water change soon....

I'd like to add a side of smoked salmon, 1/2 gallon of milk, 1 dozen eggs, heavy cream and a pound of marinating shrimp to the death toll...along with some condiments

I was thinking the same thing as MikeG, the cold shouldn't have killed the fish.

How many battery pumps? Were they the ones that come on automatically or did the tank have to wait for you to get home to turn them on?

Not any help to think of this now, but is there any chance the propane heater drove the atmospheric Co2 way up and maybe that had some impact on the fishes survival or lack thereof?

Sorry you went through this. I guess it's how we learn to deal with these things. thanks for sharing so maybe we'll learn too. I'm finally going to get a battery powered air pump (though I do have a generator, I'm certainly not going to pull it out the first sign of trouble.)

Since brine shrimp can survive for a few days at 40-50F, I'd have to go with pH shock/high CO2/low oxygen levels too.. When I import fish during the winter, they routinely arrive at around 60-65F even with heatpacks and they'll survive in oxygen packed bags for around 48 hours at that temp. Even high stocking levels wouldn't compare to the amount of water a fish in a bag has.

I could be reading this wrong but this does seem like a low blow.
I hope I am reading it wrong, it has been known to happen from time to time.
