Idea for CT/RI-specific marketplaces/tags

I'm wondering what people's thoughts would be about adding sub-forums (or something like that) within the marketplace for the seller's location. Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island specifically. I feel like there's such a large number of posts but it's usually nowhere near me so not worth going to, and I wonder if lots of other people feel this way due to the large area BRS covers.

A seller would post in the sub-forum that reflects their location, but buyers could browse anywhere. For example, someone in Bridgewater would probably want to look in both the MA and RI sections, but most likely would have no interest in the CT or NH posts at all. There could even be a western Mass vs eastern Mass section, I don't know. And if a buyer really is willing to travel all over New England, they could still check the general marketplace forum that would include all the posts.

If it would be easier to replicate/less disruptive, how about tags for marketplace forums, so that sellers can add a tag of their general location (RI, CT, NH, maybe west and east Mass, maybe even ME or VT) to help buyers filter for the locations they'd be interested in. Just something I've been thinking about because I'm kind of tired of checking so many marketplace posts (and there really are a lot nowadays) and dismissing a lot of them directly because of location. I think it would really save buyers' time, but let me know what you think!

Theres a spot to add tags when creating a to thread. Great idea, I know we've done about it in my the past but it's just another thing that we have to to manage. You'd be amazed at how many posts have to to be moved to the correct place daily.

Are you saying members can create their own tags? I assumed it was only a set number available for everyone. Is it possible to have more than one tag?

I figured the logistics would be the biggest problem.

Not a prefix but tags, yes. See pic.

Ohh, I see. Multiple prefixes aren't possible, I'm guessing? The tags are not super visible and the search function is not as convenient.
Maybe @Chris.Reef can answer this better.

I dont think we need more subforums based on location. Data attributes should be tags or user driven training for example an FAQ on how to create a for sale thread with the best practices for reaching largest audience with clear concise information.

Heres a quick AI search to yield some best practices on crafting a for sale post

Best Practices for an Effective "For Sale" Thread
  • Craft an Attention-Grabbing, Clear Headline: The subject line should be descriptive and include key information like what is being sold and perhaps the location (e.g., "For Sale: Brand New Mountain Bike - Warwick, RI").
  • Use High-Quality Visuals: Include several clear, well-lit photos of the actual item from different angles. Images help potential buyers examine the product and are often essential for driving a sale.
  • Provide a Detailed and Honest Description: Clearly list the features, condition, price, and any potential flaws. Transparency builds trust.
  • Incorporate Relevant Tags (Data Attributes): Encourage users to apply a mix of general and specific tags that describe the item, condition, and location. This helps users find the post via search functions. Examples could include: electronics, phone, iPhone-15, used-item, Rhode-Island.
  • State the Price Clearly: Be upfront about the asking price and the accepted payment methods (e.g., PayPal, local cash on delivery).
  • Include Clear Call-to-Action (CTA) and Contact Information: Tell potential buyers what to do next (e.g., "Message me for details," "Email me at...") and how to reach you.
  • Optimize for Mobile: Many users browse on mobile devices. Ensure posts use short paragraphs and easy-to-read formatting for a good mobile experience.
  • Be Responsive and Professional: Respond to inquiries promptly and politely to increase the chances of a successful sale.
  • Leverage User-Generated Content and Reviews (if applicable): If a user is a frequent seller with positive reviews, highlight this as a trust signal to new customers.

The way that the current marketplace forum is set up has paid members and sponsors integrated so they show in the all marketplace postings but then separate them. @Joe Rice spent a lot of time configuring this and there are many intricacies on how the xenforo platform works. This might be possible but will require some looking into prior to possibly implementation to ensure it doesn’t mess up everything.

In the meantime I would urge everyone to update their profile with their broad location and when they are posting items for sale or trade they list their location.

Awesome! Anyway to sticky this?

To me it would make sense if spot where it says well known member under your profile gets changed into it location. Connecticut, Rhode island, New Hampshire, Boston area, Worcester area, Cape etc.

If people would just put their location in their profile as technically required there would be no need to ask location. This is why this is noted as required.

I do really like how R2R allows location tags on for sale posts. Its very slick and I can just scroll till I see something local.

Def like when people have their state/area in their profile. Makes it quick to see whether they are close enough.

After looking into this we are not able to have multi thread prefixes at this time. At this point adding your location in the title and adding tags are the best options.

That's definitely helpful but you still have to open it up to see it.
you actually don’t have to open it up if you click on the member avatar logo/image their location pops up with out opening the post.
