Hello reefers!

Has anyone set up a big goldfish tank? I have been asked to help with a school greenhouse project. They have a 100gallon plastic stock tank in a heated greenhouse. What’s the most cost effective way to set it up for goldfish? What’s the minimum filtration?

TIA,
Richard

I'll have to search the name of the guy but there's a YouTuber who has his basement setup with stock tanks also for goldfishes

Cool, I’ll take a look. I mean, wayyy less demanding than a reef tank, but I also want to set these kids up for success.

I am not the most experienced on this, but my thought is you will need good water turnover and aireation of some type to create good oxygen and CO2 gas transfer within the water. if you wanted to also run mechanical filtration I would think you would just size it accordingly for the system size.

Thanks for your thoughts. Do you think I can get away with just running something like a powerhead or aeration, and not doing mechanical filtration? Especially if we plant some nymph lilies, or some other freshwater plant, which will help with the nitrate uptake.

This sounds like a great project and fun for the kids. I’m no expert either but I think gold fish like somewhat cooler water green houses can get pretty hot. I would check what the average ambient temp to make sure you aren’t going to make goldfish stew.

agreed he may need a chiller as I recall 72-74 degree water temp is preferred
