92 Corner/Frag/Fuge/LED build part 1

I started 7/15 and haven't stopped since. What's the point of a good build if your not going to show it of so here ya go.

I loved the way my old CL (closed loop) wavemaker made the corals dance but after 6 months of using it the biggest drawback was it never transported any debris food ext... Ultimately I ended up with an excess nutrient problem. I spoke with the engineer at Oceans Motions and to my surprise he talked me out of a 4 way and the Revolutions and instead told me where to drill and face my CL inlets/outlets to get a barrel roll effect. There are 4 1.5" outlets on the left/right sides and 2 1.5" inlets at the top center of the sides. With this setup I get anywhere from 0 - 10,000gph of flow without a single powerhead.

Here's the tank this morning in moonlight mode:

I wanted nothing under the tank this time and went through the wall with 2 1.5" and 2 1" threaded couplings and an 18ga. 20 conductor cable for the lights and future expansion.

Here's the piping/wiring with the cover on the left.

From the display the water overflows into a 75gal. I split into 3 baffled sections, the right is my bubble trap/skimmer compartment roughly 12" wide. The middle is my future frag tank with a 400 watt 14k pendant on an IceCap. The left is my DSB compartment in the front and the drain is in the back. The 75 drains into a 40 Breeder on the bottom with a fuge mud section on the left 10" and the rest will be bare bottom LR and fuge algae section(soon to have 2 10k 65w PC's)

Here is my old CL pump and a Panworld return pump

I went with a used 1/4hp drop in chiller and Vertex skimmer

A monster GEO 818 reactor. And everything is still controlled my my Apex

92 Corner/Frag/Fuge/LED build part 3

On to the LED's, which I touched upon in the vendor forum, turned out to be a challenge from the start. I cut a 1/4" piece of aluminum plate 2" smaller than the contour of the tank

led1.jpg

Added 1/2" U channel fins with heatsink compound for cooling

led2.jpg

Laid out my 3 - 24 led sections. Quarters are blue only, pennies white only and blank sharpie circled spots are a mix of 12 blue 12 white

led3.jpg

Mounted them with Arctic Silver thermal epoxy

led5.jpg

Wired them up and made a hell of a mess, my poor wife, to 3 Meanwell drivers

92 Corner/Frag/Fuge/LED build part 4

I used 3/4 pine with a grove cut in for the plate and for glass once I get it cut. Covered the pine with black Formica and laid out 2 pieces of Formica back to back for the front contour. The best and most time consuming part was drilling 72 holes +- 1/16" in another piece of Formica that I laid over the led's and held in place by the 80 degree optics. The wires have 3 1/8" stereo plugs for ease of maintenance and is hung by 3 single point adjustable wire hangers.

Well that's my 7 week project, again my poor wife. She's been great, thanks honey.

Gary like I have said it looks great. Maybe a nice winter project we could wire up Maxs Nano with LEDs. You can practice on Amandas, and get the bugs out first. Nice job.

I cant believe nobody has a comment, or a question? People comment on what color their fishs crap is, and nobody has anything to say about his build? I dont know why it bothers me, but it seems like every once in awhile someone new brings up that people dont seem to care, and thats what I get from this thread. This guy busted his a$$ putting this together, and no one can acknowledge him, and his hard work?

One of the more popular reefers gets a tank from the trash and throws something in it, and people oohh and aww over it. He builds a tank, a sump, a refuge, and an LED light that is awesome, and people dont care. You can only not care about people for so long. People dont feel like part of the club and this is a perfect example why.

I wouldnt have posted these comments in someones elses thread, but Gary is a friend of mine, and I am sure he feels tha same as I do. If you dont know Gary hes a great guy, a guy def worth getting to know. He built a wave maker awhile back, and he is really great at DIY stuff.

Once again Gary I love the light, and maybe nobody says anything because they are speechless. I am sorry if I posted something you dont agree with. Im sure this will be censored anyway.

Derek you the best man good thing we are good friends!!!!

Gary looks awesome!!! Nice clean system you have there. I thought Derek and I had a sickness.

I miss my 92, and was really kind of jealous, because it is a BE-ATCH to light a 92, and he has a slick new LED fixture. I was kind of hoping to see water in it, and then miss my old 92 even more :o

Beautiful system very thought out

It is a sick build. I dont comment much mostly lurk. I am sure you have it worked out but I noticed there is not much room in the sumps for water siphoning back when you kill the power.

NICE. I saw the setup once and was amazed. I didn't get to see the LEDs in action but its amazing that you did i all yourself. Keep up the fantastic work!!

I was thinking the same thing for a sec, but there seems to be a min and max water level marked out on his 40g fuge. Not positive if I'm correct, but aren't those three pvc check valves under the ball valves in his 2nd picture?

dont know how i missed this earlyer the system looks great have you tested par on the led fixture yet?

hows that 818 working for ya?

Derek your awesome, Thanks!

It only drains down a couple of gallons at most from the 92 into the fuge. The way the 75 is split with baffles no check valves were needed but if the left baffle went then my garage is getting wet.

Cujo I've got the reactor dialed in or should I say throtled back, I couldn't be happier with it. I was going to put it under the stand but everyone that saw it said to put it up top to show it off.

Thanks for the comments everyone, Hopefully you'll see it soon when I get some frags going.

sweet build
how are you dimming this? are you gonna get the attachment for the apex?

Nice build

And Derek you are the man :D

I also love my 92 Corner, I just wish I had a better light. This makes me want to build an LED light like this, I just do not have the time for the project.

10 year old kiosk pc

Thanks JPags, when you want to go led lmk!

I'm dimming it through the Apex base unit with ramp up/down profiles but the Meanwell drivers only dim to 8% which is too bright for my 24 royal blue crees at night for moonlights. Looks amazing but not what I was use to for the moonlight effect.

My latest addition is a 10 year old 12" ELO touchscreen kiosk pc running xp pro on a, gulp, 433mhz celeron anchor. I found this really amazing gadget for Windows Vista from Kenargo (http://www.kenargo.com) over at ReefCentral that shows your tanks stats and outlet status from my Apex. It's like having the ultimate display unit with internet access. The Gadget is here - http://gallery.live.com/liveItemDetail.aspx?li=9af44941-f08b-4b4b-9611-be7695660a12&bt=1&pl=1.

It is made to run on Windows Vista sidebar but you can run it on XP with some additional software from - http://joshoon.deviantart.com/art/Windows-Sidebar-Real-one-Pack-75626472?q=&qo=

This is one cool gadget and yes I'm going to donate for his great effort, he could have charged 15$ and I would have got it. Thank you Kenargo!!!!!!!
