93 degree reef sauna

Recently changed my tank and decided to try the via aqua 300W heater with remote thermostat on it. A week later it stuck on open and my tank was 93 degrees when I got home ::

I used bags of cold water and a fan to cool off the tank. The clown was constantly swimming around the bags so he must have been cooling off. So far everything has miraculously survived, but I'm sure I added alot of stress on the tank inhabitants.

Time to look into an additional thermostat controller or reef controller of some kind so this doesn't happen again.... (if anyone has some setup they particularly love send me a PM please!)

Needless to say the heater is now in the dumpster.

I use a RKL.

It's a nice safety to have. If you set the heater at say 80 and the RKL at 78 it gives you some room for error. Both the controller and heater would have to be messed up for something like you had happen to actually occur.

For the money you can get them it's not too bad, even if that's all you use it for.

Same here. RKL. Temp is never over 78 degrees.

I say it all the time I wouldn't have a tank without one. The cost of them are down so no reason not to. I was reminded myself when my sons nano stuck on and the tank was well over 100. I lost everything, needless to say my son was devastated. Get a controller. You will love the freedom one gives you.

Another one for a Reef Keeper controller.

Best money you will ever spend.

Also, dont keep one big heater, put 3 100W heaters. that way if one breaks but the others dont, it will take longer to heat the water. I do that despite hving the RKL, only because I dont trust anything that is electronic.
