BRS Roadtrip to Atlantis Aquarium on Long Island / Joint meeting/BBQ with CTARS (Conn. Club) and Manhattan Reefers – Saturday August 16

This is it, the blowout BRS event of the year. On August 16th, Saturday we will be renting a large travel coach (likely 56 people/bus) and heading down to Long Island NY to visit the Atlantis Aquarium. We will likely be picking up friends of ours from our sister club CTARS (Connecticut Area Reef Society) along the way. At Atlantis, we will also be joined by members of the Manhattan Reefers Club, for a BBQ and a massive inter-club meeting and frag swap.

Atlantis Marine World’s Coral Reef exhibit is the largest all-living, closed-system Coral Reef display in the Western hemisphere. Thirty feet long, the 20,000-gallon exhibit depicts a natural reef ecosystem, including a reef wall, crest, terrace, and back reef. We will likely get a behind the scenes tour by one of the designers/managers of the reef tank Joe Yaiullo, Curator/Co-Founder. The aquarium also has displays with sharks, rays, sea lions, seahorses, touch tanks, etc., etc. Go to the Atlantis site for all the details:

Details of our trip:

Pickup points:

There will be two pickup points in Mass.
Pickup point #1 near the juncture of I-93 and I-95 (exact location TBD), and pickup point #2 near the juncture of I-90 and I-95 (exact location TBD). At the pickup points you should be able to park and leave your car for the day.

There will also be a pickup point in Conn. for the CTARS people (exact location TBD).

Time:

Please note, pickup times have changed (somewhat earlier). They have been sent to all participants by email or PM. Also the exact locations have been defined. If you do not have the info CALL ME 781-224-3309 H, or 978-247-3173 W.

Bus leaves pickup point #1 at 7:45 AM, and point #2 no earlier than about 8:30 AM (please try to arrive 20 min. early). We will have a BOD/officer member at each location trying to check people off and get folks organized before the boarding the bus. We will likely return to point #2 by about 7 PM, and point #1 by 8 PM (give or take an hour). There are no plans for dinner, so bring a snack if you think you will be hungry before we get off the bus. We will likely have about 3 hours at the aquarium to eat, view exhibits, and chat/swap with our follow New England reefers.

Cost:

The cost of this trip is being heavily subsidized by the club’s funds thanks to our successful auction at the end of last year, and the beginning of this year (thanks again to all those donated, or bid). The cost of the trip (as described below) will include the ride to Atlantis (including the round trip fare on the ferry), and admission to the Aquarium. It’s possible that there may be an additional cost for the BBQ, but this is yet to be worked out. The BBQ might be partially pot luck. In any case, if there is additional cost for the BBQ it is not likely to be more than $5-10/pp.

Cost for members is $41 per person for the next 7 days (until midnight on Monday May 12th, 2008). Any member can bring a spouse (or S.O.) or their children for the same cost ($41 each). You might be asked to show your BRS membership card. Cost for non-members is $78 per person. If you wish to join (advisable given the cost difference), you can do so on the spot (on the bus).

After midnight on Monday May 12th the cost will climb to $51 per person for members, $88 per person for non-members.

For the next 7 days we will guarantee that anyone that registers will be able to come (meaning that if necessary we will book an additional bus). If you register after 7 days, availability for you will be dependent upon whether we reach a certain participation level (meaning we will fill a second bus). Depending upon participation levels we may cut off registration at a certain point, we will post that information here on the BRS site. Once you register for the event it is non-refunable, but you can get someone else to take your spot on the bus (if you’re registered as a member, only a member may take your spot). If for some reason we cannot get enough people for your bus you will have your $ refunded to you.

How to pay:

You can send paypal to ‘info at bostonreefers dot org’ or send a check made payable to Boston Reefers’ Society direct to:

BRS Treasurer
Susan DiBenedetto
167 Channing Ave
Brockton, Ma 02301

Please make it clear on your paypal payment, or a piece of paper included with your check:

1. That you are registering for the BRS Atlantis Road Trip

2. How many people you are registering for, and if they are members or non-members.

3. Please also include your REAL NAME

4. Your preferred pickup location (north, I-93/I-95 junction, or west I-90/I-95 junction), and

5. Phone number so we can reach you if something comes up last minute.

If you are sending a check and want the early registration cost, you need to have your check postmarked before midnight May 12th, 2008.

Children:

Any children under 18 will need to be accompanied by an adult who will be held responsible for them.

Waiver:

We may ask that you sign a waiver before boarding the bus, assuring that you understand that you are responsible for any children traveling with you, that you are responsible for your own behavior, and that you need to be back ready to board the bus at the appropriate times or you may be left behind.

Very cool.
A cooler is a must. :D

I'm in southwest RI, a long ways from either pick up point. I assume you're taking a Ferry across, do you know which one? New London or Bridgeport? Can I park at the Ferry and get on the bus there?

>New London <

Yes, you can get on there. We'd not decided upon the best pickup point in Conn. I will be checking with the CTARS people on this.

We just need to know ahead of time so we leave the right amount of space on the right bus (assuming we end up with more than one bus).

trip

snail mailed mine today.

WOOOOOT Jen and I are in:D!

Will there be confirmations sent out?

I'll send out confirmations in a day or so.

Deadline extended for the road trip cheap tix - also added pickup point south

We've decided to extend the last date for getting the reduced price for the BRS roadtrip ($41) for another 5 days, until midnight, Sunday, May 18th.

Thus far we have about 30 members that have registered for the trip. Also, we've decided to add another pickup location to the bus route. The added location will be near the point where I-95 peels away from its loop around Boston and heads south (near Norwood). This will make the trip much more convenient for BRS members from south of Boston.

I wish I could go, but my wife's due within 48 hours of that trip.

Is there a doctor on the bus? ;)

A correction, the BBQ will be hosted by the Long Island Reef Association.

How do we find out if our Paypal payment was received and if we are on the list?

Thanks!
