so been out for a couple of years, well have had a nano but just set up my 90 reef again and have everything back up and running no fish or anything in the tank yet just water flow, rocks, sand. getting a new pulsation from the water flow and the water level in the over flow is rising and dropping a bit. Im using my old pump which worked fine when last used but theres a chance theres something wrong idk. its an iwaki MD20RLXT. anyone have an idea what may be going on? thanks mason

it is possible that the pump is over powering the drain.

Agreed. I assume the pump isn't adjustable, so your best bet is to use a ball valve to throttle down the pump. That should take care of the problem.

the weird thing is that its the same pump and using all the same plumbing, sump and such. the only thing that I can see that seems different to me is it seems like the water level where the water goes into the sump is ls at water level seeming like actually below the water line. Been out for a while so idk if thats a no no, maybe that is causing a suction to cause a problem. I toned down the pump with a ball valve, which seems to be helping the pulsation but doing this is making the pump hardly pushing water

What kind of returns? Are the air passages blocked? Or too deep? Could be an airlock...

So I think I figured it out my over flow tube got adjusted to low and that's what was causing it thanks for all the help!
