so today i went to one of my local pet stores and bought R/O water. looked at fish and stuff and bought a Sand Sifting Cucumber. I was looking at some dry good also and came across a TDS meter for $40. i didnt feel like spending $40 but i did. took it home and tested the RO water........

059ppm

isnt this suposed to be 0ppm from RO water?
RO water from pet store=059ppm
House tap water= 079ppm

isnt the RO water i've been buying for the past 3 months suposed to be 0ppm?

thanks

yes should be 0

is 059ppm bad?

Should be 0. You could call the lfs and see when to replaced and ask for new 0 water.

and i was wondering why i had purpleish alge in the sand.......could this be the problem??

this is annoying seeing i pay like $12+ a week for like 3 months for ''RO'' water

i think its time to buy my own RODI system

Cant help your sand.

yea having tds of 59ppm is not good. people that have ro units usually change out there filters when there water reaches between 2-5ppm. it's not the end of the world but it def doesn't help out algae issues. i would def look into getting your own system. you will save a lot of money also in the long run.

The same thing happened to me when I was buying water at my LFS. I had a bad hair algae bloom that just got worse everytime I did a water change. When I took a sample of my newly bought water to another store, the guy started laughing because the TDS was so bad. I changed LFS, got rid of my algae and then invested in my own RO/DI. You might want to double check the accuracy of your new TDS meter before you complain, but if you are paying that much for your water, you might want to let the LFS store know their water is bad. Other people are probably buying his water and having problems too.

how do i check to see if my tds meter is accurate?

oppm when the water is coming out of the filter... there could be some leaching from storage... but 59 is pretty high! i could see 10 or so...

I would ask that pet store.. compare your tds meter to theirs to get a rough idea if it's off

You have almost bought yourself a new RO/DI unit

That would be my advice. If you need more of a push, consider the gas and time/hassle it is to haul the water

59tds is too high for absorption, unless you measuring it in the bucket you make your water in and it has some
salt left in when you add the new water

I gave up and bought my own RO/DI unit when I found out my LFS didn't have zero TDS... And if you're spending over $12 a week on RO/DI purchasing your own unit will pay for itself very quickly. And the filters will last for a while if you only have 79ish TDS from tap... I have 200-300+ TDS from my tap water depending on the season and I've had my filters running for over a year with no decrease in output...

any recomendations on a RODI unit.......

one thats easy to hook up, and i dont need alot og GPD.....someting i can reily on.

Just checked my tap is 40. I wish I could sell that for $12 a week. Lol

Everyone here is spot on....59 is too high, and buy your own filter

AWI has some nice units, they're a sponsor and they have a discount for being a paid member... Something in the 75 GPD is more than enough for a 29 gallon tank...

You can shoot me a pm if you want the code...

so after looking on the AWI website i found 2 units im intersted in

mighty might 50gpd
Compact 75 GPD Reefkeeper RODI

i only need 24 gallons a week (for my salt water tanks and freshwater tanks)
which system is easier to hook up and how/where do i hook it up?

I hooked my RO/DI system through the shower nozzle outlet and fill my water jugs in the tubs. It also has the advantage of preventing flooding if I forget to turn off the unit. You can also connect it through the kitchen faucet, the connector can be found on Melev's reef.

Sitting RO water will pick up some co2 and get a TDS reading from that. Not sure if it would be that much, but it is a potential factor.
