Bonding plexi glass to Glass

Fish junkie
Not a fish mod but a D.I.Y thing, I'm trying to make some shelves in a glass cage for my daughters hampster, I was just going to silicone the plexi glass to the glass tank but maybe you have a better way. Thanks all

The silicone won't bond with acrylic as well as it will with glass, but it should be plenty strong enough for hampster shelves. Just be sure to let the silicone cure for at least a day, or much better a few, before putting the hampster back in, those fumes can be pretty potent.

How about buiding an actual acrylic box with the shelving in it that can be dropped in and taken out for cleaning?

Silicone can definitly be bonded to acrylic if you use enough of it. If you use make the shelf connect to the opposite side of the tank it will definitly hold if you silicone the bottom and top of the acrylic. If you plan on making a platform that only touches a single wall of the cage your going to have to make support beams or a support wall underneath the shelf. The silicon will definitly hold alot of weight if you do it correctly. I made shelves for my turtle tank the same way so 3x8" turtles worth of weight + dirt/sand is pretty hefty. Biggest problem would probably be the hampster chewing on the silicone.

I ordered 3 shelves, and 3 ramps Shelves will touch on 3 sides, only 1/8 thick, I will connect the shelves with a 3" wide plexiglass, Ramps will be bonded on 1 side against the glass, and attach to the shlve, Should be in tomorrow,
I bought one of those plastic hampster cages with the tubes, The things almost died, Got stuck in one of the tubes, I thought they could squeese through anything. Took it back to the store with the quickness, This should work better

ummm how "heavy" is this hampster? I've never seen a hampster ever get stuck in one of those tubes. they can squish down pretty good even when they are kinda chunky.
