Just FYI- glass will filter out most UV radiation, which is designated into 3 categories (UVA, UVB, UVC). UVC is the most energetic and hence dangerous and it's uses include steralization devices, such as steralized hoods in bio-labs. Fortunately, most of this spectrum is filtered out by the ozone layer. This is produced by the MHs and is why we need the glass covering the lamp. Glass also filters out UVB, the type of radiation that is responsible for tanning (or sunburns in my case), and producing Vitamin D. Lastly, UVA is the least energetic of the UV light and least dangerous (although does damage the skin to some extent). UVA is not filtered by glass.
As a side note, I've always wondered if we are depriving our corals of energy they would normally get in the wild by cutting out UVB.
Hope that didn't hijack the thread too much! I'm sure you'll get the problem sorted out soon, Cindy and your corals will all be just fine.
