buy high sell low on fishes

the difference in my opinion is that we eat to survive. Using a fish to cycle a tank can be looked at as catching a wild fish and tossing it in the fire. Not like you are going to eat that devil damsel when it dies.

i would own a cow as a pet if i wanted one and had the means to care for it. i would also gladly eat it's family if it was for dinner. there's a difference between food to live and pets that's what makes them pets.

But if you really care for all animals equally you don't have to eat fish, cows, etc to survive. There's plenty of vegetarians in the world surviving without eating animals.

Ok,this thread became a train wreck.

Its not that i care about animals the way you are talking. I care about the animals that i commit to caring about. I also hate veggies and will gladly eat a steak and a multivitamin. There is a difference between killing something to utilize it and getting something as a pet and then just giving it away because you are bored. My 10 year old dog doesnt like to play anymore. Off to the pound with her because she is boring.

lol sorry. I'm not trying to start arguments or anything, I just find it interesting. Like what is it inside us that gets us all upset when people hunt deer, yet not care a second when someone catches a fish for dinner? I suppose I can ask myself because I'm the same way about most animals. Its sad when I see a cat that got run over, yet a dead possum or squirrel doesn't bother me. Is it the way we are raised? Is it that we only care for the cute animals?

I agree!

nothing makes me upset about hunting. Without it comes overpopulation and disease. Seeiing a cat in the street gets me because that was likely someones pet that they failed to take care of. A squirrel or possum is wildlife. There is small game hunting allowed, but who wants to pop squirrels when you can go out and pop deer?. Without the management, there is an overpopulation, hence seeing them in the cities where they are very very likely to be hit by a car or become rabid.

mmm..they only survive becasue of all the vitamins they need to take. Without those they would be messed up. As Humans, we NEED animal protein.
and the ones that dont take vitamins cheat by eating white meat and not red meat. But an animal is an animal.

Not entirely true... I have a friend that's been a vegetarian for prob 10 years now that doesn't take any vitamins and is surviving. I'm sure it would be better for his health if he did, but just saying.

well, I wonder how healthy he is.

dont sell your fish. thats what the grill is for. I hear that tangs taste great.

For matter of fact, the same people who catch your yellow tang for aquarium trade also eat them as food. I have seen photo of these people cooking dinner plate size of yellow tang as well as something similar to purple tang.

Nonsense. If someone wants to sell a fish because they'd prefer to add another one, or even if they get "bored" with a species, how can one imply that this makes the individual less of a hobbiest?

who said they were less of a hobbiest? I said that their commitment and husbandry is questionable. Maybe its me but I research and have a working knowledge of anything I want to put in my tank. I make a commitment to raise this animal...maybe it works out, maybe it dies but I try to help it thrive. I make sure if Im adding something to my reef that it will bring me enjoyment in the future...but I know there are people out there that walk in the LFS and say "hey that fish is pretty lets buy it" with little regard for care...I find little sympathy for those people that turn around 2 mths later (when they find out that butterfly fish eat polyps or that diamond gobies are mini sandstorms, ect.. ) and complain about selling a fish for less than what it cost them. Im not saying that if next year you want to sell your hogfish to buy a wrasse its wrong...Im refering to the throw away additude of some "hobbiest".

I wonder how much that goes for a pound?

^^ I think i saw somewhere once that achilles tang as a food is something like $4/pound or something ridiculous.
