ChatGPT and Reefing Keeping

Im sure many of you know, but just in case, AI products like ChatGPT are a great tool and can be utilized very effectively in our hobby. The statistics that many of us collect regularly can be difficult for even the seasoned reefer to analyze and adjust without research and performing some math (that so many hate). Next time you're wondering about how to adjust or analyze your tank's statistical data try using an AI program like ChatGPT. For instance, you receive your ICP test and your not sure what an elevated level means or why or how to adjust...put the scenario into the AI program and then ask the question. Its extremely helpful for questions of this manner. Say you're wondering about your No3=Po4 Ratio and want to analyze the numbers and adjust or identify what could/should be performed to provide best climate for your coral...ask AI. Youll be amazed at the responses. Or youre unsure if your Alkalinity level is within proper range for your current calcium/mag level. The program will provide in-depth analysis and then a corrective schedule with product suggestions based on the product's chemical composition. The uses are almost limitless, especially with all the data points that we collect in our automated systems in 2025. Im not saying to chase numbers because that can be frustrating and unnecessary but we all know there are acceptable ranges of these data points and this tool is something to consider.

Take a look...it cant hurt and you may just be amazed.

You may have just help me with a possible activity I can do my school reef club to integrate technology into managing the reef.

Although I think AI is beneficial overall I would be weary putting the faith of my tank in its hand at this point. I’ve been paying for and using ChatGPT since it came out, I have not noticed many problems with ChatGPT.

However I have noticed same funny responses from Googles Gemini AI. While these answers aren’t necessarily incorrect it seems AI dropped the ball. I will explain more in a second.

Once AI answers your question I would recommend taking it a step further and researching what it’s telling you. After all when using AI it is all about inputting the correct information to getting a valid response.

One of my funny experiences- recently, right before Ovechkin broke Gretzkys goal scoring record I googled something along the lines of top NHL goal scorers of all time. The answer was about a paragraph of information about Martin Brodeur. This was a funny response to me, again not wrong, but not the answer I was looking for. For those of you who don’t know Martin Brodeur was a goal tender. (The best of all time might I add)

While Martin Brodeur has the most goals scored out of any goaltender in the NHL he of course is not the top goal scorer of all time. A few AI have been temporarily shut down in the past requiring some tweaking before being put back online. Just be careful!

Just don't tell it where John Conners lives!
T-800 makes a great controller, but you need to upgrade to T-1000 to unlock hidden functions. BTW, John Conners can be found easily on Google maps unless he is using VPN.

I'd caution this advice. Many AI programs are terrible at even simple math but will still glad you give you an answer with the utmost confidence.

My advice would be simple. Don't mess with parameters YOU don't understand.

Overtime I can see this advice ringing true, but for now, proceed with caution.

While I agree that I wouldn't inherently trust ChatGPT to perform higher level math, the equations, that we in this hobby perform, are not of that level. Ill agree it's important to critically review any answers provided by ChatGPT but Ive yet to find an error for the simple equations or conversions that we perform for reefing. Another nice resource is its ability to provide the "how" it reached the answer. It will give you the math it used, equations, conversions, etc...with a little human piloting it saves a ton of time and gives you ideas you may have overlooked. JM2C. Take it as you will.
