Curious if Anyone Dip LR, LS, Macro Algea

I know we all dip our incoming corals with iodine and interceptor for pest. With all the pests that hitchhike I'm curious if anyone dip new LR and LS? What about macro algea as well? I'm thinking this could be another way that these pests get transfer from tank to tank without knowing.

Thats a tough one PVH, problem is if you dip chaeto/macro algae youll preety much kill any life in it if thats why your adding it its a moot point and 50% here are only using it whether they know it or not to promote life, etc you need at least 20% volume or larger to actually export nutrients but thats another topic and or argument...........best bet is to try to get it from a known pest free source, which about everyone claims to be.............I know my macro has FW none of the acro eating type but none the less they are a nuisance to some people..................

LR can be dipped but I personally wouldn't dip it with dips we use for corals same reason as above, better off with dead marco rock and seeding it or freshwater dips to get some of the other pests gone, mantis, gorilla crabs etc.......

Sand Me personally I buy live sand but not because its live, its actually artificial bacteria, I buy it due to the fact its cleaner than some other types and for grain consistency in certain types............chances are if your getting sand/rock the tank is new thus most pests won't survive the cycle and or die due to the lack of they're food source at least redbugs and AEFW........during the average 6 week cycle..........

Thanks Chew. So it sounds like it's a gamble if I were to buy LR, LS, algea from any body who said their tank is pest free.

What do you think about getting these and putting them in a QT tank for 6 weeks length? Will this be enough to starve all the pests? Just want to be save and planning my next step just in case I do decide to upgrade.

Read the disclaimer in the FS forums. There have been several instances of respected members of this club who have sold frags or other stuff, then discovered to their horror that they had some type of pest. They usually stand up and admit it, but people can have bad stuff and not know it! 6 weeks in a QT will not get rid of everything.....like FW, mojanos, gorilla crabs, aiptasia, etc

Caveat emptor!

Regarding dipping stuff like rock, sand, etc. I think it really depends what you are trying to do. IMO, the really bad parasites that people are worried about are the parasites that eat certain corals. Usually these parasites are specific to one genera of coral, so unless you have that coral, they will die pretty quickly. This means that if you are setting up a new tank, or even a tank that only has a few corals in it, I see little point in dipping the rock, sand, or anything else. As mentioned before, you will kill off most of the critters you want to be adding to the tank. Of course, there are nusience critters that can come in, but most of them are controlable (Aiptasia, Valonia, Majano, etc.).

The alternative for some of this is that you can hold stuff (rock, macroalgae, etc.) in an isolated system for a few weeks. This will give a chance for any parasites to die for lack of a host.

Greg, yes that's what I was thinking about. Using a QT for new LR, LS, macros. Maybe leave it in a QT for 6 weeks or so.

I just wanted to bring this topic up to draw attention to the risk we face if some people want to add more LR, LS, or macro to their establish tank since pests could be transfer via these medias.

Greg what's a good natural Manjano control? Peps have always been good for me controlling Aptasia but not Manjano. Kalking them is a long manual task.

mojano's i find rather easy just to remove the rock rub they're feet and they detach.......aiptasia isn't so easily persuaded like this.........
