cutting the rim of the tank

Corwyn

I am in Raynham
I've been reading the large tank forum over at reef.
Someone has a nice new toy
http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=560359

Looks like the overflow box is attached just by cutting the edge/rim of the tank.

Something like this may actually work very well for my 180 and the space I have, but can you really do this?

My tank is 2' wide
If I did this to my tank I would probably do 4 boxes
so it would look like this

____ 5" _____ 5" ____
5" |___| 4" |___| 5"

This is right side, left side would be done the same
with 4 1" dursos.

IS it really safe to cut the edge like this? Or am I just better off using
modified U tubes to feed the boxes?

I have seen people do this and cut the a gap in the glass on one side of the tank to within say 1" of the front and back glass, and then put 2 large diamter drains in the bottom of the external oveflow chamber that is fed by this wide surface skimming over flow cut. Obviously this is extremly cool because you keep all the clutter outside of the tank.

There are a bunch of threads on this over at reef central. They use some sort of tile bit and dremel to cut these.
