Cycle question

Set up a 20 gallon with live sand, mostly dry rock and one piece of live rock. Tested after 6 days, ammonia was 0.5 ppm, nitrite was 0.5 ppm and nitrate was 0 ppm. On day 7 tested and ammonia was 0.25 ppm, nitrite was 0.25 and nitrate was 5 ppm. Could it be possibly that my tank is finishing it's cycle already?

No not likely....Probably just scatter in your data.

Jim

PS do you have anything in the tank to kick start it?

Waiting for a tank to cycle is the most painstaking aspect of the hobby. But if this is your first tank it provides you ample time to do research on what types of fish and corals will be in your tank, and ultimately the order in which they will be added. A cycle usually takes around a month in my opinion and while this varies it is better to be safe than not. The presence of ammonia still in the water column means that your cycle is not over. I recommend waiting a week after ammonia is not longer detectable before adding any livestock. Hope this helps.

Best,

Alex
