Cycling Update/ Question

Hi All,

Hope you all had a good time at the FFM while I was at my daughter's dance competition with loud music and now i'm deaf. I think the answer is be patient but looking to get some second opinions to make sure i'm still on the right track.

I'm on day 10 of cycling with Dr. Tim's one and only. Ammonia has been at 0 ppm since Day 7, Nitrite was 5ppm Day 7 and Nitrate was 20 ppm. As of Day 10, Nitrite has been at 2ppm for the past 3 days and Nitrate is now at 80 ppm. PH is 8.1. Keep cycling and be patient or should I do any other adjustments? thanks!

Joe

I think you can give it some more time to let the tank settle in for a bit. You still have some nitrite (although that doesn't really affect saltwater fish) but the bacteria still growing and doing their thing. Also 80 ppm nitrate is quite high on a new tank, you may have some algae boom coming up for the ugly phase. Potentially do a small WC. Patience is key to a thriving tank.

thanks. i thought the nitrate is a bit high and patience is the answer. just didn't know if a water change is a bad idea while it's still cycling.

I tried doing the Dr Tin's cycling method and while the fish were fine I lost some corals when I put them in and I wish I would have waited a week or two after everything tested fine.

With the numbers you posted tank doesn't seem fully cycled but almost there but nitrites should be zero and nitrates should be a little lower to be cycled.
