Deavestation Hit on my reef

Hey Fellow reefers,

Wish Everyone a Happy new Year!

Sadly I come to post for some advice because of a sad Hit :(

About a month ago I introduced a kole tang into my system (I did not QT)
about two weeks ago I started to noticed what I believed to be ICH all over the tang. Christmas eve found him dead before I could do anything, week later ALL MY FISH WERE DEAD. I am so sad I lost my two first fish from 6 months ago (2 clowns) and my coral beauty along with the original carrier the kole eye tang. I will never not QT again I`m soo angry i`m rather new to this hobby but I didn't realize the importance of QT and how fast Ich can kill. Im so sad I dont even want to put any effort into the tank. I mean I killed four fish!

What do I do now? I have read the ich lives on the sand bed, but will eventually die with no fish host? Was thinking about changing the sandbed would this be a good time? When can I add fish again? Do I need to treat tank? Errrrr sooooo pissssed
poor fish!

assuming you've live rocks and snails and crabs in the tank, I would not treat the tank with anything.

I know it's really sad that all the fish died, but think of it as a blessing in disguise ... now you're tank is fishless -- run it this way for 8-10 weeks for the ICH to die off.

You do not "need" to change your sand bed, but if you were planning on doing it anyway, then might as well do it now. Would be much easier since you don't have to catch any fish and stuff.

Really sorry for your loss :( ... went through the exact same ordeal myself not too long ago ...

like said above, don't treat the tank just don't add fish for around 8 weeks. I did the same in the beginning, and now i have a QT setup and will never go without again. For the money and time you put in the hobby, an extra 50 bucks for a QT tank and an HOB filter is just chump change.

Sorry to hear about your losses. This hobby definitely stinks at times.

Personally, I would just let the tank go fishless for a bit. But in the meantime, you can setup your QT and put some fish in it.

changing the sand bed may also release lots of bad stuff, so you might want to do it slowly depending on your remaining livestock and the age of your sand bed

I hear you buddy. I introduced a tang to my system in the past, ich outbreaks and wiped out 8 out of 9 fishes. It's heartbreaking to see one go after another.

Are you wanting to change the sandbed out due to the ich or just because you are not happy with the substrate? If it is the former then I would let the sandbed be and let the tank go fallow for at least 6-8 weeks. I know it's a huge bummer especially after losing your livestock to ich but on a happy note that will give you time to set up a proper QT system and get a fish or two in the QT so when the display is ready you can add the fish. I try to see the positive side of things and in this hobby you need that ;)

There's a reef-safe herbal ich medicine called Kordon's Ich*Attack that I used many many times in my old 29g with no ill effects and it fully wiped out any and all signs of ich the few times I had to use it.

Thanks for the responses. I was wanting to change out my sand for look, not because of ich. Was thinking about doing it in steps over the next 8 week fowel period. As far as livestock left there is only hermits/ Crane shrimp snails etc and mainly lps and softies. All though losing my fish was/ is a bad hit kinda glad it wasn't my. Oral. Will be setting up qt tomorrow gonna have to pull a heater out of my DT and rely on water movement from a aquaclear 110 power filter I will be using. Now correct me if I'm wrong but now since my DT. Has ich I won't be able to use any water or seeded material from it to set up my qt? TIA reeferes.
