For those of you who have experienced using a DSB (properly set up) and are using either bare-bottom or shallow substrate coverage, do you miss it?

Personally I find I had more success with my DSB, than without. The diversity of life, especially in the sand bed, seemed more plentiful. Having run a 2" bed for the last 2.5 yrs, I don't think I would do it again. For the record, I broke down a 5+ yr old system consisting of 3 SPS dominated tanks with sand-beds varying from 4.5-6" and no hydrogen sulfide smell. So, no. I do not subscribe to the "DSB as a ticking time bomb theory".

Not really relevant to your question Joe as I have never run a bare bottom tank, but today I removed a ton of live rock from one of the tanks on my system. It has a 6"+ sand bed and most of the rocks were buried at least a few inches down. When I was done, there was no sulfur smell, and I really made a mess. I changed out some water and let it settle, then turned the pumps back on with no problems.
