Ecotech Marine VorTech

I'm thinking about buying into this system, i was wondering if you thought they are worth the money?

I loved the Vortecs as far as performance goes. I actually think they produced a bigger wave than the Tunze 6100’s I have. They also look IMO a bit more tasteful. A huge down side is you cannot angle them at all. The overflows are on the ends of my tank so the options are limited for placement. Mounted on the back wall at 30” deep I had to turn them down so much to avoid sand storms from the flow washing the glass. If they came out with an angle adapter I would sell my tunze 6100’s again for them. In my 120 when they were mounted on the ends of the tank they were just awesome. :D

I have no experience with them so I can't offer on an opinion. But I do have some helpful links on the topic

i like mine, definitely noisier than the tunzes but once you feel how hot the backside gets you realize how much heat tunzes are adding to the tank.

i would say they are best suited to inwall set ups due to the noise and the fact the backside will be hidden

alledgedly the wave driver should be able to sync opposing pumps to create a wave effect, have'nt tried that though.

i have two mp40w's and the wireless wave driver is a really nice feature. you can basically create an unlimited flow pattern with the antisync feature.

I don't like them....Send Yaktop a PM..... I got him a few a year or so ago...He likes them. (as far as he tells me)

had them, liked them.....what they lack in angling they make up for in dispersion, etc in 12" they disperse wider than any tunze, heat was less in the tank, less space, you can make a wave with them yes but it requires 2.

I have Vortechs and love them and they are only noisy in S.P and L.P. {short pulse and long pulse} which are used to create waves, but I use mine in either sync or anti sync (I switch it monthly to create diff flow patterns) and in either reefcrest or lagoon random (mostly lagoon random but I switch them often)....my overflow is louder than the V-techs {unless in pulse modes}...but two other features that most compareable pumps dont have are "night mode" the pump(s) can be run at 50% power for 10 hours, and at full power for 14 hours, mine slow down from 11pm-9am and I have noticed that with night mode I get crazy PE...and the best feature of all is the battery backup feature, one battery backup will run two pumps for 15 hours or one for 30 hours during a power outage (my power outs in Norwood last a half hour tops-knock on wood!!) no more having four B10's mounted to the back of the tank with the air lines having to be hidden in the rock-work. Go with the Vortechs you will be very happy.

I got the one in the BRS silent auction. It runs in my 92 bow at about 80% reef crest. If I run it higher, I get sandstorms, but like the random flow it sets up....in addition to the 2 full blast mod nanostreams to help randomize the flow patterns.

I think a second one would be overkill in a 92.

nah jay I had 2 in a 65g I mounted both up high on full blast reefcrest anti sync mode offest to create a whirpool effect + i had the tunze wave box. I'm sure if you played with them you could avoid the sand storm.

My personal opinion is that the wave driver module drove them slower than the original driver. Could explain the lower wattage consuption when connected to the wave driver module.

2 MP40's? Wow. I figured with the modded nanostreams at 1100+/hr each, 500+ from my return, and the MP40 at 2500+, I was turning over 65x in a mixed reef. The corner tank has it's own flow challenges, and my scape doesn't help. I have a hard time keeping sand at the front of the tank in the middle along the glass. I'd have to move my colonies of candy cane to relocate a nanostream, and I don't want to do that......

Oh, and sorry to hijack. It's still vortec chat, right?

BTW, I do get a pretty good hum from mine. It is definitely the largest noise source from my 92. The overflow is a close second.

ahh my bad i meant you could probably just 2 vortechs and can the rest.....If my new tank ever get off the drawing board it will have vortechs again.

I'm very big on no noise coming from my tank, sounds like if i do buy these I'll should be ready for some noise?

you're always welcome to come listen to the hum.

I can hear it....

It isn't near as noisy as the fan hum frommy maristar fixture over at my other tank, but I can hear it.....

I like them when they work. They keep falling of the glass and I just sent 1 in for repairs and it is still doing the same thing. They charged me to rebuild the wet-side with the new gen magnet and I ordered a spare wet-side. Right now both wet-sides are sitting at the bottom of the tank.
