it looks like my tank is using a lot of water..
how much should a tank be loosing for evaporation?

There are a lot of factors that would affect evaporation.

I run a fan for cooling on a 30 gallon tank and evaporate about 3/4 of a gallon a day. My reef tank is 155 gallon and evaporates about a 1.25 gallons.

How much are you losing?

The dimension of the tank matters too. If you have a lot of surface, it'll evaporate more.
I lose about 1.5gallons a day on my 200gallons (63"x32") open top.

I evaporate about 1-2 gallons a day in our 90 gallon depending on the heat, humidity, and relative cooling fan operations.

I used to lose lose close to 5 gallons per day when I had multiple tanks in my basement, all with cooling fans to push the evaporative cooling.

It takes about a month for my 55 gallon. The winter time i seem to use around double the amount.
