Are the Rio pumps any good? I found the Rio 1700 for ~$45 shipped. I'm looking for some feedback. BTW it's only for water changes. But I don't want anything that is extremely loud.

Price, reliability, noise are important to me. Is there anything better for the price?

No, please don't use. They are prone to catastrophic failure. They can melt down killing all inhabitants in your tank. Even if they have fixed this problem by now, they are still prone to seizing up due to calcium deposits more than many other pumps.

There are hundreds of hobbyists out there with horror stories about Rio pumps.

Rio = Bad

I use a MJ1200 for water changes - but then I'm only changing 10-20 gallons at a time.

Thanks for the tips! I'm leaning towards the mag 5 right now.... I'll let you know what I go with. Thanks again!

Take a look in equipment for sale. I'm sure that you could probably find a great pump for water changes at a very good price. I personally use a mag 7 for my changes -- approximately 20 to 25 gallons at a time. I used to use a MJ 1200 but the mag is a whole lot faster.

I can't beleive I'm about to say this, but yea, I agree, mag pump for water changes. Cheap and versatile (IMO the only good thing about mags)

And yea, what greg said, RIO = BAD
