the film on the top of my water is getting very thick and i can notice that the halide is not as bright because of this.Does anyone know how to get rid of this?

are you using an over flow it should pull this off if not tilt a power head up to the surface you should have surface water movement any way to help oxegenate your tank. sue

That's one of the reasons I went with a surface skimming elbow. You can try pointing a PH at the surface but it usaully only opens a hole through the surface scum.

no overflow but i have a power head 2" from the top of the water.

if you have enough flow ie. 10x the tank this should really not happen most of the toxins and oils float to the top that is why most people use an over flow either box or plumed in type that pulls this layer of water off the tank all the time down to the sump and skimmer

i used to get that film in my sumpless 55.
when it happpened i knew it was time to clean the air intake tube on the skimmer and to point a powerhead's flow at the surface.
