Hey fellow reefers,

Just installed a filter sock for the first time been running without one decided to try it out. Placed in system on Saturday and already notice a difference in water clarity. My question is, currently it is hanging off of the overflow output to the sump and partially submerged in water (about half of sock) is this how you guys do it I don't see away I could have sock complety out of the water due to space. TIA

33.jpg34.jpgI have a filter sock on both of my returns... one is a 3 sock system into my refug

and a single sock into my sump... not submerged at all works great both ways!

With socks partially sumerged in water, how often & how are we cleaning them?

it would depend on how dirty ur system it............i have 2 socks......everytime i have to clean 1...i install the xtra one i have and put the dirty one in my washer machine and add oxy clean........will make it brand new again......do the same when u swap out the next time....

filter sock problem and question....

i have a quick question about my 6in filter sock. we just changed the sock on saturday, and today the saltwater is overflowing over the top of the sock and into the sump. we have 3 socks that we alternate every time we do a tank change (we do one water and sock change a week), also we have we have been running 2 socks since march when we first got the tank and this new sock since september. the entire sock is now brown. is it normal for the water to flow over the top of the sock and into the sump? . i feel like its not filtering at all... when we first got the tank it never overflowed like that, now its doing it with all 3 socks and within just a few days.
any ideas or suggestions would be GREAT!!

thanks!

when the sock has water flowing over the top of it, it is completely clogged and is not longer serving any purpose... the thing with socks are, and this can be a real pain, but you have to keep them clean and continously change them out, even if its daily...

do you use charcoal in your sock and change it out once a month? I've tried researching and saw some folks just say 3days/mo bc it depletes the tank unless you have a crisis. Would there be any reason for a business as usual/no issues tank w/few fish and corals to have to have charcoal? ty

I wouldn't use anything in a filter sock as they clog up rather quickly by themselves.
Best thing to do is have 2-4 socks and change them out every week or so.And then wash the clogged sock with a little bleach and water.
I use my trusty garden hose and spray them while insideout. Some put them in a wash cycle and have good luck with that.

I change my sock every 5-7 days or so and I do keep carbon at the bottom for now until I get a reactor in a few weeks.
