Moody and emotional slob
As most of you that own an older Fluval canister filter know, the Impeller well covers are notorious for breaking.
I have purchased replacement covers twice now and was not about to buy a third.
No matter how hard you try these covers like to break during routine cleaning of the impeller.
I was about to throw this filter away and buy a new one when I had an idea.
Pic #1: Shows the bottom of the motor housing where the Impeller cover locks into.
Pic #2: This is the impeller cover. Notice the 2 locking tabs have broken off.
Pic #3: Here is how I dealt with the problem. The Impeller cover locking tabs slide into a groove in the motor housing via 2 large cut away's on either side of the impeller cover. Amazingly enough the thin gauge acrylic that is sold at home depot is the exact thickness of this groove. So out came the dremmel and a couple of different sized grinding bits. You need to keep the old impeller cover intact do not cut away anything on the cover. Grind up a plate that looks exactly like that in the pic. Be sure to maintain the hole in the middle as this is where the impeller draws water through. I could have taken more time to make the repair look pretty, but who cares. I did not take any measurements this was done on the fly.
Pic #4: Here is The new locking plate holding the Impeller cover in place. This works perfect. I could not have asked for anything better.
Hopefully this helps you out if you run into the same problem.
