Formalin

I am posting this for a newbie friend. He just bought a wild caught maroon Clown, and it appears to have Brookynella. Is Formalin the treatment of choice for this? If so, where does one find it? I have zero experience with this. I've never had a fish requiring a formalin treatment.......

I believe it is the treatment of choice. i've read that early intervention is best.
recently lost a perc to horrible case of brook..was rotting his mouth off..

Thanks, you know my opinions of quarentining fish already, LOL! :D Any where to get this stuff locally. I'm led to believe this needs fast tx. This tank has only been set up for about 2 mos tops. If it where mine, I would just leave it alone for a bit, but his tank isn't very established yet.......

if it is brook,,i would act on it quickly..
call around to some LFS's..someone must have it..not a big fan of 'Formalin 3' by Kordon. it's diluted and just more of hassle to figure out correct dosage.. i had no luck with that product-although i had it for awhile so not sure on shelf life.

Tropics Isle seems to have most of the meds, but on the pricey side.

Does not matter how old his tank is, the fish needs to be treated in a QT tank, which means in a seperate tank. The medicine for treatment will kill off the bateria from the maintank, which is not what he wants to do.

Your friend would have to do some reading for him/herself if he/she is serious about treating this fish. Here is a link:

You misunderstood me. I would treat the fish in my main tan. I am aware that is a big "no no". I am not big on treating them at all, unless absolutely necessary. I think catching them and placing them in a sterile, smaller tank stresses them out big time in most instances. I've actually introduced fish with ich, and other things to my tank with full confidence that they would recover better in a natural environment. It's worked every time. But any way, any where close to revere that carries this stuff? Thanks for the link!

if i'm not mistaken, you MUST take the fish out of the main tank to treat with formalin. formalin is a very rough treatment, kind of like chemotherapy for fish. i think formalin is toxic so you could kill all the other fish in your tank. i used it to treat 2 true perculas that i had but they both eventually died. tropic isle has formalin but it is indeed pricey. i was giving some away in my "miscellaneous items" for sale thread but harry took it. i don't think success rates with formalin are high.

Is it worth the time, or should he do a fw dip and see what that brings?

Formalin is 4% paraformaldahyde, if it is full strength be sure to use it in a well ventilated area. This is used as a fixitive in the medical community and is very toxic.

Yeah, it's a carcinogenic(sp?) I think. Another reason to get tank raised fish when possible......

No way I would do this in the main tank. It will crash.

Yes it is a carcinogen, pretty nasty stuff that you don't want to inhale. I use it at work quite a bit and it can only be opened in a fume hood due to saftey requirements.

I always treat any WC clowns with formalin 3 for 3 weeks before putting them in a main system. shelf life is very short on it though 2 years I think...so if its an old bottle it wont work.

straite formalin is VERY harsh on fish...espicially a sick one already and it is VERY VERY easy to dose wrong and harm the fish more than help, thats why I prefer formalin 3 "baths" directions are on the bottle do a 30-45 min bath every 3 days for the first week, then once a week for 2 more weeks. I'd HIGHLY sugest after each bath to do a 3 min fresh water bath with double the amount of stress coat because formalin strips it from the fish. I know this is a harsh treatment and most fish with an already bad case of brook most likley wont survive it, thats why with clowns its good to do the treatment when you first get them while they are strong and can handle the treatment!

Brook, like ick is very hard to get rid of once its been introduced into your main system so the clowns will need to stay in Q for at least a month after all treatments are complete to let it recoop so it can fight off the brook when put BACK into the system.

Good luck to your friend! I lost an onyx to brook in only 3 days... (my formalin was old so I had to order a new bottle...it died before the bottle arrived)

Thanks Jov! He said the fish is acting good other wise. The Grim Reeper is probably upon him though.......

BTW...I've got almost a full bottle of formalin 3 if he wants to do a bath. I cant give him the whole bottle because *crosses fingers* I'm getting my new clowns next week but I can give enough to start treatment today till he finds a petstore to carry it... I'm in medford if intersted pm me.
