french angel...

Joel A

Started over.
I think the colors on the juvys are unbelievable. I really want one, always have... is it a big risk to try to house a smaller one (2-4") in a reef tank.

I understand that i couldn't house it properly forever with the tank i have currently, but when it gets to big i could either get a larger tank or find it a new home.

Anyone have any thoughts?

FA's can grow to 12" plus, is semi agressive and can nip at LPS, softies, Zoanthids and clams.
IME, don't get the fish if you only plan to keep it temporary or have a tank that less than 100 gallons. It's not fair to the fish.
A fish only system, greater than 100 gallons would be prefect though.

Well i know that... they can actually if cared for properly get to 15" +
But this also takes a LONGGG time.

I don't know.. i don't have any other options right now for a bigger FO tank, and i'm just looking for something unique to spice up my tank and though an angel would do the trick.

Maybe a trigger?

I always really liked trigger fish, but the last one i have started to go after inverts (it was a niger). I know that there are "reef safe" triggers, but would they go after shrimps?

The niger I had in my 72 went on daily search and destroy for snails and shrimp. Was still a tank favorite though. I love the near constant movement.

Yeah, i sold my niger.. he was getting a bit too aggressive. But to date he is my favorite ever fish..

I just want something different in my reef.. you know?

i've kept both emperor angels and navarchus without problems in a few tanks. i did notice one emp pic at a toadstool for a bit but then stopped. I'd personally go with the navarchus first. Angels in general, Pomacanthus, Holacanthus as well as the dwarf angels all have it in them to "munch" on some coral or another if they want. Been a lot of stories about flames and coral beauties after x amount of years all of a sudden start picking at some coral or another. To me its worth the risk if it ever happened. As far as the french goes, I wouldnt. Just my two cents :)

Joel, you've seen my BlueJaw Trigger, how about that as an option for you? Certainly a cool looking fish and he has been a perfect citizen since I got him a couple months ago.

I am a fan of the blue jaw as well (males). I had a bigger one and he never bothered my CB shrimp or peps. I don't think he ate any snails or hermits either.
Other "reef safe" trigger options would be a crosshatch or a sargassum, the latter is said to be the most reef safe trigger of them all.

Yeah i do like the blue jaws too. Def. an option i'm considering. I really like the crosshatch too but they too much money.
